  • Traffic Management For Frame Relay Switched Data Service

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6847611, Jan 25, 2005
  • Filed:
    Sep 1, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/654616
  • Inventors:
Christopher J. Chase - Freehold NJ, US
Stephen L. Holmgren - Little Silver NJ, US
John Babu Medamana - Colts Neck NJ, US
Vikram R. Saksena - Freehold NJ, US
  • Assignee:
AT&T Corp. - New York NY
  • International Classification:
    G01R 3108
    H04L 1228
  • US Classification:
    370232, 370395
  • Abstract:
A new type of data transport service which uses a frame relay layer data link connection identifier (DLCI) to select among various service types, feature sets, and/or closed user groups (CUGs). A layer address may be extracted from a layer frame, and the layer address information may be used to route a data packet over a packet-switched network according to the service classes, feature sets, and/or CUGs selected. At the destination, the layer data packet may again be enclosed in a layer frame with a DLCI indicating the service classes, features sets, and/or CUGs. Because the use of conventional permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) is not required in aspects of the invention, new methods of measuring and managing network traffic are presented.
  • Technique For Ethernet Access To Packet-Based Services

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7092389, Aug 15, 2006
  • Filed:
    Oct 31, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    10/001545
  • Inventors:
Christopher J. Chase - Freehold NJ, US
Stephen L. Holmgren - Little Silver NJ, US
David Kinsky - Piscataway NJ, US
John Babu Medamana - Colts Neck NJ, US
Jeewan P. Ramsaroop - Edison NJ, US
Mateusz W. Szela - Hillsborough NJ, US
  • Assignee:
    AT&T Corp. - Bedminster NJ
  • International Classification:
    H04L 12/56
  • US Classification:
    370389, 370401
  • Abstract:
An Ethernet Metropolitan Area Network () provides connectivity to one or more customer premises () to packet-based services, such as ATM, Frame Relay, or IP, while advantageously providing a mechanism for assuring security and regulation of customer traffic. Upon receipt of each customer-generated information frame (), an ingress Multi-Service Platform (MSP) () “tags” the frame with a customer descriptor (′) that specifically identifies the recipient customer. In practice, the MSP tags each frame by overwriting the Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identifier () with the customer descriptor. Using the customer descriptor in each frame, a recipient Provider Edge Router (PER) () or ATM switch can map the information as appropriate to direct the information to the specific customer at its receiving site. In addition, the customer descriptor (′) may also include Quality of Service (QoS) information, allowing the recipient Provider Edge Router (PER) () or ATM switch to afford the appropriate QoS level accordingly. Each Ethernet switch may advantageously overwrite the VLAN identifier at an incoming port with a second tag associated with an egress port to increase the scale associated with single switch.
