Abstract:

A heat exchanger includes a core adapted to heat air with counter-flowing hot gases. Substantially isothermal hot and cool portions of the core are interconnected by a matrix portion exposed to a temperature gradient. A top sheet is positioned over the core and includes first and second ends and a middle portion between the first and second ends. The middle portion includes a window and compliant ligament portions extending alongside the window and interconnecting the first and second ends. The first and second ends of the top sheet are positioned over the isothermal cool and hot portions of the core, respectively, and the middle portion of the top sheet is positioned over the matrix portion of the core. The compliant ligament portions of the top sheet are deflectable in response to the temperature gradient across the matrix portion of the core to reduce strain on and deflection of the first and second ends of the top sheet.

The top and bottom plates each include a pair of manifold openings, and the header finned members each include a curved free edge following the curvature of an associated manifold opening. The header finned member includes a high fin density portion along the free edge and a low fin density portion communicating with the high fin density portion. The dual fin density header finned member thus provides increased structural strength along the free edge and provides a low pressure drop through the low fin density portion.

Abstract:

A microturbine system includes a compressor, a recuperator assembly, a combustor, a turbine, and a generator. The recuperator assembly includes a core that preheats compressed air provided by the compressor with exhaust gas from the turbine. The preheated compressed air is mixed with a fuel and burned in the combustor. The products of combustion are used to drive the turbine, which in turn drives the compressor and generator. The recuperator core is surrounded by a recuperator housing that is intimate with the recuperator core such that the recuperator housing assumes substantially the same temperature as the recuperator core. The recuperator housing is constructed of materials that have a coefficient of thermal expansion that is substantially equal to that of the recuperator core, and that have thicknesses substantially equal to the thickness of the recuperator core materials. A superstructure supports the recuperator core and resists expansion of the core in a stackwise direction. The superstructure includes tie rods outside of the recuperator housing, and the tie rods are substantially thermally isolated from the heat of the recuperator assembly by insulation.

Abstract:

A cogenerating recuperated microturbine includes a recuperator, an air compressor and a combustor. The combustor burns a fuel along with the compressed air received from the recuperator to create products of combustion. A turbine generator operates in response to expansion of the products of combustion to generate electricity. The products of combustion then flow through the recuperator to preheat the compressed air. The products of combustion then flow out of the recuperator as an exhaust flow. A heat exchanger is movable into and out of the exhaust flow to selectively heat a fluid in the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is actuated by a piston-cylinder type actuator that operates under the influence of compressed air selectively bled from the air compressor. The actuator may be a single-acting cylinder used in conjunction with a biasing spring, or may be a double-acting cylinder.

Abstract:

A heat exchanger includes a plurality of heat exchange cells positioned in a stacked configuration with respect to each other. Each cell includes first and second parting sheets, an internal finned member, and at least one external finned member. The first and second parting sheets include opposing first and second surfaces, an inlet manifold portion, an outlet manifold portion, an internal finned member portion and peripheral edges. The second parting sheet is substantially superimposed by, is spaced apart from and is coupled to the first parting sheet. The second surface of the second parting sheet confronts the second surface of the first parting sheet. The peripheral edges of the first and second parting sheets are attached to each other. The internal finned member is disposed between the second surfaces of the first and second parting sheets and has a leading edge positioned adjacent to the inlet manifold portion of the first and second parting sheets, and a trailing edge is positioned adjacent to the outlet manifold portion of the first and second parting sheets. The external finned member is attached to one of the first and second parting sheet. The external finned member has a leading edge and a trailing edge and is positioned offset from the internal finned member such that the leading edge of the external finned member outwardly extends beyond the leading edge of the internal finned member and the external finned member covers a portion of the inlet manifold member.

Abstract:

A control system for regulating the torque and speed of an alternating current wound rotor motor used in the traverse drive of an overhead travelling crane comprises an SCR bank controlled by a firing circuit responsive to actuation of an operator-controlled induction master control. The control system further comprises means for deriving a torque signal indicative of instantaneous rotor torque, means for deriving a speed signal indicative of instantaneous rotor speed, and summing means for combining the torque signal, the speed signal, and a reference signal from the induction master control to provide an error signal which is used to operate the firing circuit to thereby control the power delivered by the SCR bank to the motor and insure that motor torque is constant for the speed selected. The means for deriving the speed signal measures the instantaneous frequency of the instantaneous current flow in the rotor (secondary).
