Abstract:

A method for processing a mass of solid fine particles including Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (âNORMâ) is disclosed. In one embodiment, the material is sampled and classified into fractions based upon one or more selected criteria such as particle size or particle density. The level of radioactivity associated with each fraction is determined, leading to separation of the mass of fines into selected fractions based upon one or more selected criteria and the activity levels of the fractions. Selected fractions are chosen for chemical treatment, thereby reducing the volume of material to be treated. By reducing the volume of solid material to be treated, the amount of chemicals used for treatment is reduced, along with the size and capacity of the processing equipment required to treat the material. Radionuclides are extracted from the selected fractions into an aqueous solution which may be subsequently injected into a subterranean formation, such as the formation from which the materials originated. In one embodiment, the aqueous solution consists of water, a chelant comprising an alkali metal salt of a polyamine polycarboxylic acid, and sufficient alkali metal hydroxide to result in a pH of the aqueous solution of about 5 to about 14.

Abstract:

Method of fabricating a magnetic bubble memory device in which the magnetizable upper overlay pattern of magnetically soft material, e. g. permalloy, defining bubble propagation elements and bubble function-determining components as located above a bubble-supporting magnetic film is disposed in a wholly planar configuration to avoid bubble propagation anomalies encountered with typical non-planar overlay patterns of magnetically soft material. The fabrication method provides for the consecutive deposition onto a substrate having a magnetic film capable of supporting magnetic bubbles of a layer of non-magnetic electrically conductive material, a layer of insulating material, and a layer of magnetically soft material, such as permalloy. Patterning of the layers then proceeds from the uppermost layer downwardly in stages to form magnetically soft components defining the elements of magnetic bubble propagation paths and magnetic bubble function-determining components as a planar upper overlay pattern from the layer of magnetically soft material, insulation spacers from the layer of insulating material, and control conductors as a planar lower overlay pattern from the layer of non-magnetic electrically conductive material. Patterning of the respective layers is preferably achieved by ion milling of selected portions of the layer of magnetically soft material as defined by a first mask and by sequential plasma etching of selected portions of the underlying layer of insulating material and the layer of non-magnetic electrically conductive material as defined by a second composite mask partially comprising the overlay pattern of magnetically soft material and photoresist material.

Abstract:

The invention is a self-propelled floating decoy for simulating the swimming characteristics of waterfowl. Propulsion in the water is produced by a sculling tail fin (25) which also causes a side to side rocking motion that simulates the back and head movement of a live duck paddling its feet. The decoy includes a flat base (11) with a shallow draft. The flat bottom of the base (10) is the lowest point in the water with no obstructions that would become entangled in congested water. An opening (11c)in the rear end extends through the base (11) so that an electric motor(16) driven propulsion system moves a tail fin (25) coupled to said propulsion system through the opening (11c). A decoy shell (9) representative of a water fowl is attached to the base (11). The tail fin (25) moves from side to side providing a motion to the decoy approximating the motion of a swimming water fowl.

Abstract:

One or more rigid sealing segments are attached to pipe end sections and the assembly lined to form a fluid-resistant joint. A segment surface forms the primary sealing interface of lined pipe sections without the need for a conventional removable liner edge seal. The lining process and configuration sealably bonds the liner to the fluid-resistant sealing segment and to the non-fluid-resistant pipe. The manner of bonding both avoids (or limits) liner stress and covers the non-fluid-resistant material of the pipe. In an alternative embodiment, the sealing segments are engaged at mating threaded surfaces, the mated threads providing a single primary sealing and engagement interface. Redundant liner end sealing may also be accomplished by a sandwiched deformable material if added reliability of sealing harsh fluids is desired. In another embodiment, portions of the rigid sealing segments are slidably mounted relative to each other and the primary seal interface is temperature actuated.
