Abstract:

A method creates cover pages for news themes, topics, and stories, with elements to allow viewing more information from the theme, topic, or story. A database of stories is provided, comprising text, images, and possibly other web-accessible content. For a theme-based cover page, a theme is selected, and topics relevant to that theme are chosen. Search strings generated from the topics are used to search the database for matching stories. Representative images for the matching stories are then chosen from the database, and headlines are created based on the story content. For a topic-based cover page, a topic is selected and is used to search the database for matching stories. The cover page, comprising the image and information about the theme, topic, or story, is then created and displayed, with clickable elements to view more information about the theme, topic, or story.

Abstract:

A method determines and displays the geographic location of a plurality of articles. At least one geographic location of each of the plurality of articles is determined. The determining includes extracting entities of the article, determining which extracted entities are places entities, determining a geographic location of each of the places entities, and attributing the geographic location of each of the places entities with the article. A map is created. The map comprises a geographic map. A plurality of clickable markers are displayed on the map. The clickable markers correspond to the geographic locations of the plurality of articles. Attributes of the markers may be modified. When a marker is clicked on, a web page may be instantly published, the web page comprising articles having a geographic location of the marker that was clicked on.

Stories are organized and displayed by themes. Theme names are created and topic names are chosen for the theme names. For each topic name, topic search strings are created. A database of stories is search for stories matching the topic search strings. At least some of the matching stories are displayed as a single web page. A messaging system enables client applications to send and receive messages. The messaging system includes independent component programs performing different functions of the messaging system, such as connection managers that maintain network connections with the client applications, a message router that sends received messages to recipient applications through network connections, and a dispatcher that authenticates other component programs. A messaging server may authenticate client applications using certificate-based authentication (e.g., private and public keys), authentication transfer from another trusted messaging server, or other methods (e.g., user name and password). To authenticate a component program, the dispatcher compares instantiation information (e.g., user identity, process identifier, creation time) of the component program provided by the operating system with instantiation information saved in a shared memory at the time of the component program's instantiation. In response to a match, the dispatcher provides the component program with secure information through an inter-process communication socket.
