Abstract:

A low profile evaporator coil assembly and method for configuring the assembly in HVAC equipment. In one deployment, the assembly is located between a heating furnace and a plenum. The assembly includes multiple coil slabs through which a refrigerant courses. The slabs lie in a parallel relationship at an angle of inclination to the air entering a coil assembly. A baffle is associated with each coil slab to constrain air flow through the associated coil slab. A drain pan is positioned beneath the slabs. The drain pan has multiple troughs for collecting condensate. At least some of the multiple troughs have an air foil that reduces air flow restriction.

Systems and methods for low ambient air temperature cooling in air-source based heat pump systems wherein an outdoor heat pump unit includes a discharge hood positionable over its fan. The hood including a damper that is openable and closeable as a function of outside temperature. The outdoor unit may also include wind deflectors positioned over the coil openings of the disclosure. During cooling operations below a low outside air threshold temperature, e.g., below 23 F., the damper assembly partially closes to reduce airflow across the condenser coil of the outdoor unit to a level below that which is possible at minimum fan speed. As the outdoor temperature continues to drop, the damper assembly continues to close to further reduce airflow.

An air-to-air heat recovery core, comprising: a core assembly having parallel first and second channels that are open to first and second sides of the core assembly, respectively, the first and second channels interleaved, and each first channel sharing a wall with an adjacent second channel; first and second sealants formed along opposite first and second edges, respectively, of the core assembly perpendicular to a running direction of the first and second channels, the first and second sealants respectively blocking first and second ends of the channels; and first and second panels secured to first and second sides of the core assembly, respectively, the first and second panels blocking a middle portion of the first and second channels, respectively, such that air can enter and leave the first and second channels via the first and second end portions of the first and second channels but not via the middle portions.

Abstract:

A heat pump system with a hybrid heating system is disclosed. The heat pump system includes a first housing comprising a heat exchanger, a compressor, and a fan. The heat pump system also includes a second housing that includes a supplemental heat source that is activated when the outside air falls below a certain temperature. The second housing includes a series of dampers that permit recirculation of the air passing through the first housing so that the supplemental heat source can provide heat to the recirculated air. The supplemental heat source increases the heating capacity of the heat pump system.
