Abstract:

A bone anchor () for attaching a rod () to a bone has an anchor member () for attachment to the bone and an anchor head () having a U-shaped opening for receiving the rod. The bone anchor also includes a locking cap () that has a main body () and a set screw (). Advantageously, in one embodiment the locking cap preferably is designed such that a single tool can be used to lock the locking cap in place on the anchor body preferably with a 90 turn and preferably then drive the set screw to clamp the rod. The locking cap also preferably non-threadingly engages the anchor body. The anchor body preferably has an inclined surface on its top surface which elastically deflects extending tabs on the main body to secure the locking cap to the anchor body. A method of implantation and assembly of the bone anchor are also described.

Abstract:

A minimally invasive system includes a bone screw and a tissue retractor having distal and proximal end portions and a partial pathway therebetween. The tissue retractor is removably couplable to the bone screw. An instrument has distal and proximal end portions and a hollow cavity and is removably couplable to the tissue retractor. A drive shaft has a diameter less than a diameter of the hollow cavity and is rotatable with respect to the instrument. A counter-torque handle has gripping and an interlock end portions with an instrument interface releasably positioned within the hollow cavity at the proximal end portion thereof and rotatably fixed thereto in an assembled configuration. The interlock end portion also includes an open-ended slot having a width greater than the drive shaft diameter such that the counter-torque handle is movable to and from the assembled configuration while the drive shaft is within the hollow cavity.

Abstract:

Bone anchor assemblies are disclosed herein that can provide for improved fixation as compared with traditional bone anchor assemblies. An exemplary assembly can include a bracket or wing that extends down from the receiver member and accommodates one or more auxiliary bone anchors that augment the fixation of the assembly's primary bone anchor. Another exemplary assembly can include a plate that is seated between the receiver member and the rod and accommodates one or more auxiliary bone anchors that augment the fixation of the assembly's primary bone anchor. Another exemplary assembly can include a hook that extends out from the receiver member to hook onto an anatomical structure or another implant to augment the fixation of the assembly's primary bone anchor. Surgical methods using the bone anchor assemblies described herein are also disclosed.
