Abstract:

A diffusion aluminide coating having a graded structure is applied over a nickel base superalloy substrate. The coating has an inner region of a diffusion aluminide adjacent to the substrate rich in a reactive element, typically Hf, Si or combinations of the two. The near surface region is a diffusion aluminide which is substantially free of reactive elements. Such coatings when used as bond coats in thermal barrier coating systems exhibit improved spallation performance.

Abstract:

A method is provided for making, from a plurality of members brazed together, an article including an environmental resistant surface coating and a wear resistant surface portion. Prior to brazing, the members are assembled with at least one preform including the wear resistant material in a matrix including a first brazing alloy having a brazing temperature in a brazing temperature range. The assembly of members includes a second brazing alloy having a brazing temperature in the brazing temperature range. The assembly of members and wear resistant preform is heated in the brazing temperature range to provide a brazed article preform. Then the article preform is machined to a selected geometry and can be coated with the environmental coating.

Abstract:

A built-up gas turbine component is prepared by providing a gas turbine component having a component surface and being made of a component base metal having a component base metal composition. A buildup tape is supplied having a net metallic buildup composition different from the component base metal composition. The buildup tape includes a first metallic constituent having a first melting point, and a second metallic constituent having a second melting point. The first metallic constituent and second metallic constituent together have the net metallic buildup composition. A nonmetallic binder binds together the first metallic constituent and the second metallic constituent. The buildup tape is applied to the component surface and heated to a brazing temperature greater than the first melting point and less than the second melting point. The first metallic constituent melts and fuses the first metallic constituent and the second metallic constituent to the component surface as a buildup deposit on the built-up gas turbine component.

Abstract:

A nickel-base superalloy article, such as a gas turbine stationary flowpath shroud that has previously been in service, is repaired by applying a restoration coating to a surface of the article. The restoration coating is applied by providing a precursor mixture, wherein the precursor mixture has no more than about 15 weight percent chromium and no more than about 0. 01 percent yttrium, and wherein the precursor mixture includes a higher-melting-point alloy component and a lower-melting-point alloy component. The precursor mixture is applied to the surface of the article, in a form such as a preform of the alloy components. The article with the precursor mixture applied to the surface thereof is heated to a sufficiently high temperature to melt the lower-melting-point alloy component, thereby forming the restoration coating on the surface of the article.

Abstract:

A turbine engine combustor member, for example a deflector including an inner surface at a combustor interior and an outer surface away from such interior includes a body of a high temperature alloy having properties combining resistance to hot corrosion in March=1 flows and oxidation to avoid coating the outer surface. In one embodiment, the inner surface includes an environmental resistant coating comprising a ceramic-base thermal barrier coating. In some forms such coating includes an inner coating including Al under the ceramic-base coating. In another embodiment, the member includes air cooling passages and is substantially uncoated. Provision of such a member enables complete combustor assembly including a plurality of members and then coating all inner surfaces concurrently rather than individually before assembly.

A method of reducing crack propagation includes: providing a metallic component having an exterior surface, and using a burnishing element to apply a varying to the exterior surface within a selected area, within which the component has a varying thickness, so as to create a region of residual compressive stress of surrounded by an interior boundary. The distance from the interior boundary to the exterior surface at any location within the selected area is independent of the thickness of the component at that location, and may be controlled by changing the pressure and/or an amount of overlap between burnished segments.

Abstract:

A method for repairing a nickel-base superalloy article, such as a gas turbine stationary flowpath shroud having flowpath cooling holes therein that has previously been in service, includes the steps of providing the nickel-base superalloy article that has previously been in service; and applying a restoration to a surface of the article. The restoration is applied by the steps of providing a restoration nickel-base alloy, wherein the restoration nickel-base alloy preferably has no more than about 15 weight percent chromium and no more than about 0. 01 percent yttrium, thereafter applying a restoration coating of the restoration nickel-base alloy to the surface of the article by a hyper-velocity oxyfuel metal spray process or a low-pressure plasma spray process, and thereafter heating the article with the restoration coating applied to the surface thereof to a sufficiently high temperature to diffusion bond the restoration coating to the surface of the article. The article is then returned to service.
