Abstract:

A micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) device is provided, along with means for its fabrication and operation for microfluidic and/or biomicrofluidic applications. The MEMS device includes a substrate, optional electrodes on the substrate, a patterned structure on the substrate, the patterned structure having a fluidic microchannel aligned with one or more of the optional electrodes, an encapsulation membrane covering the microchannel, and an optional reactive layer deposited over the electrode in the microchannel. MEMS devices of preferred embodiments permit a leak-tight seal to be formed around the microchannel and fluidic interconnects established for robust operation of fluidics-based processes. MEMS devices of other preferred embodiments permit reversible attachment and separation of the encapsulation membrane relative to the patterned structure.

Abstract:

Isolated peptide substrates of Plk1 and nucleic acids encoding these peptides are disclosed. The peptides include two to ten repeats of the amino acid sequence set forth as XXAXXXPLHSTXXXXXXX(SEQ ID NO: 1), in which within each repeat X, X, X, X, X, X, X, X, and Xare each independently any amino acid or no amino acid, and Xand Xare each independently any amino acid. Methods of using these peptides to detect Plk1 activity in a sample are also disclosed. In some examples, the method includes contacting a sample with a disclosed peptide substrate of Plk1 in the presence of adenosine triphosphate, or an analog thereof, for a period of time sufficient for Plk1 to phosphorylate the PBIPtide. The presence and/or amount of the phosphorylated and/or the unphosphorylated peptide is detected, thereby detecting and/or quantitating Plk1 kinase activity in the sample.

Abstract:

Hair compositions and methods for caring for and providing cosmetic benefits to the hair using the compositions are disclosed. The hair care compositions may include about 50 to about 90 wt. % of a polyol; about 0.1 to about 10 wt. % of fatty compounds, the fatty compounds comprising a carbonate and a fatty ether; about 10 to about 35 wt. % of a monoalcohol; and about 0.1 to about 5 wt. % of a cationic surfactant, wherein all weight percentages are based on the total weight of the hair composition. The hair care composition may be formulated to have a weight ratio of the total amount of carbonate to the total amount of fatty ether is about 3:1 to about 1:1.

Abstract:

The present disclosure relates to hair care and conditioning compositions comprising polyols; monoalcohols having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms; fatty alcohols selected from cetyl alcohol and myristyl alcohol; cationic surfactants; fatty carbonate esters; and dialkyl ethers. When the composition is applied to the wet or damp hair or put in contact with extraneous water, the composition forms an emulsion having a lamellar phase. The present disclosure also relates to methods of treating hair using these compositions.

Abstract:

The invention provides novel compounds that may serve as anticancer therapeutics. The compounds of the invention bind to polo-like kinases through the polo-box domain. In certain embodiments, the compounds of the invention are POM-protected peptide derivatives. The use of cationic bis-alkyl his residues in combination with a mono POM-protected pho-phoryl group results in a peptide possessing an overall neutral charge. The peptide derivatives of the invention have achieved both good efficacy and an enhanced bioavailability. The invention also provides methods of use, compositions, and kits thereof. Further, the invention provides a novel method of design and/or synthesis of phosphoryl-derived peptide derivatives useful as therapeutic agents.
