Abstract:

An invented corkscrew machine includes a rotatable spiral radius pinion gear mechanically coupled to an annular collar and engaging an inclined gear rack for translating a driver up and down carrying a freely rotating, helical corkscrew. A crank rotates the spiral radius pinion gear for translating the driver up and down relative to the collar the along the rotation axis of the corkscrew with a mechanical advantage that increases as driver approaches the collar. A non-rotating collar cam coupled to and translatable relative to the driver, receives and follows the helix of the corkscrew for imparting torque rotating the corkscrew when held stationary within the annular collar responsive to translation of the driver toward and away from the annular collar. A biased, releasable collar latch captures and holds the collar cam at the stationary position within the annular collar releasing it to translate upward with the driver upon an upward âcork pullingâ stroke of the driver relative to the collar only when a bottle is held within the annular collar. Factors establishing the inner and outer radii of the spiral pinion gear include the desired degree of crank rotation, the required vertical translation of the driver relative to the annular collar for pulling corks from necks of bottles, and the ratio of minimum and maximum resistance forces expected to be encountered in skewering and pulling corks from the necks of bottles.

Abstract:

A method for providing centralized anatomic pathology services. A plurality of regional pathology laboratories is provided, each laboratory servicing a defined geographic region. A master storage (e.g., database) of pathology information is maintained, the storage being accessible by pathologists associated with any regional laboratory via a communications link. Tissue samples requiring pathology processing are collected from a medical entity located in a first geographic region by a regional pathology laboratory. The tissue is processed, and a tissue slide is created. A digital, diagnostic quality image of the tissue slide is created and stored in the master storage. A pathologist, who may be remotely located with respect to the first geographic region, is provided with access to the stored diagnostic image via the communications link, to enable diagnosis by the pathologist without physical possession of the slide. The digital, diagnostic quality image may be compressed before it is stored in the master storage. The diagnosis may be a primary or a secondary diagnosis. In the case of a secondary or supplemental diagnosis, the pathologist is provided with access to any prior analysis and annotations, stored in the master storage, relating to the diagnostic image. A system for implementing the method is also disclosed.

Abstract:

A method and system is provided to allow for determination of substantially Hematocrit independent analyte concentration. In one example, an analyte measurement system is provided that includes a test strip and a test meter. The test strip includes a reference electrode and a working electrode, in which the working electrode is coated with a reagent layer. The test meter includes an electronic circuit and a signal processor. The electronic circuit applies a plurality of voltages to the reference electrode and the working electrode over respective durations. The signal processor is configured to determine a substantially hematocrit-independent concentration of the analyte from a plurality of current values as measured by the processor upon application of a plurality of test voltages to the reference and working electrodes over a plurality of durations interspersed with rest voltages lower than the test voltages being applied to the electrodes.

Abstract:

A system and method for reducing amplitude distortion in data signals transmitted via cellular analog communication systems are embodied in several forms. In one embodiment, pre-emphasis and de-emphasis functions of the cellular system are offset by complementary de-emphasis and post-emphasis circuits to preclude clipping of high frequency components of the data signal by the limiter. Alternatively, the limiter circuit is selectively bypassed when a data signal is transmitted. Alternatively, a pilot tone is combined with the incoming data signal. The amplitude of the pilot tone is constant and always sets the gain of the limiter, thereby keeping the gain of the limiter circuit constant. Alternatively, a pair of signals at different frequencies are transmitted on a telephone line, and the relative amplitudes of the return echoes are measured to determine the frequency roll-off of the line and adjust the spectral shaping accordingly. Alternatively, a pair of modems vary their respective spectral characteristics until the eye quality values of the two modems are satisfactory.

Abstract:

A system and method for reducing amplitude distortion in a data signal transmitted through a cellular analog communication system is embodied in several forms. Each specific embodiment of the invention eliminates distortion caused by clipping or sluggish recovery time induced by a limiter circuit which exists in conventional cellular communication systems. In one embodiment, pre-emphasis and de-emphasis functions of the cellular system are offset by complementary de-emphasis and post-emphasis circuits so that the high frequency components of the data signal are not clipped by the limiter. In another embodiment, the limiter circuit is bypassed selectively when a data signal is transmitted. In an alternative embodiment, a pilot tone is combined with the incoming data signal. The characteristics of the pilot tone are such that amplitude of the pilot tone is constant and always sets the gain of the limiter, thereby keeping the gain of the limiter circuit constant.
