The communications network further includes a residential gateway in communication with the broadband communication line. A method and system of providing facsimile service over a digital subscriber line is provided. The method includes the steps of dialing a telephone number associated with a facsimile machine connected to a digital subscriber line and routing facsimile data over the digital subscriber line. The system includes a facsimile machine coupled to an ATM switch that is, in turn , coupled to a digital subscriber line, wherein the digital subscriber line includes a first virtual circuit and a second virtual circuit.
