  • System, Method And Computer Program Product For Event Correlation In A Distributed Computing Environment

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6336139, Jan 1, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jun 3, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    09/089965
  • Inventors:
    Metin Feridun - Thalwil, CH
    Michael McNally - Austin TX
Brian Jay Vetter - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1516
  • US Classification:
    709224, 709202
  • Abstract:
A method of event correlation implemented within a distributed environment having a management server and a set of managed machines. The preferred event correlation method begins by establishing a discrete set of correlation rules. One preferred implementation of a correlation rule is a software-based state machine. Each correlation rule is adapted to recognize a given pattern of one or more events indicative of a given condition. A set of correlation rules comprise a set of efficiently-coupled state machines, each of which is optimized for a particular, low-level logical function. Then, as events are received and/or generated at the machine, the events are examined by the state machines comprising the correlator to search for the defined event patterns. If a given event pattern is recognized, a given condition sought to be monitored has occurred, and the event correlator may then be used to take a given action.
  • Directory Tree User Interface Having Scrollable Subsections

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6448985, Sep 10, 2002
  • Filed:
    Aug 5, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/368681
  • Inventors:
Michael R. McNally - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 300
  • US Classification:
    345784, 345786, 345841, 345830, 345853, 345854, 345855
  • Abstract:
A directory tree is displayed and a command is detected to expand a subsection of the directory tree. It is determined whether certain criteria are met for displaying the subsection in a scrollable region within the directory tree. The subsection is presented in the scrollable region if the criteria are met, so that a greater number of members of the directory tree outside the subsection can be displayed within the graphical user interface. Some of the criteria which can be used to determine whether a scrollable subsection should be used include: whether the subsection has more than a predetermined number of members; whether all members of a root node directory of the tree can be displayed if the subsection is fully expanded; and whether the subsection is at a predetermined depth in the directory tree structure.

  • International Classification:
    C06F 15173
  • US Classification:
    709203, 709223
  • Abstract:
Disclosed is a system, method, and program for executing operations on a client computer transmitted from a server over a network. A server operation is received indicating actions to perform on the client. A determination is made as to whether the requested operation is permitted according to a set of rules. The requested operation is executed on the client if there is no rule that prohibits the requested operation. The server is then notified that the requested action completed or that the requested action was not executed because of at least one rule prohibiting execution of the operation.

International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1516
  • US Classification:
    709202, 709223
  • Abstract:
A large distributed enterprise includes computing resources including a management server servicing a plurality of endpoint machines. A management infrastructure include a runtime engine is deployed on given endpoint machines. In response to a task deployment request at an administrative server, discovery agents may be launched into the computer network. When a software agent arrives at a given machine that supports the runtime engine, the agent is executed to determine whether the endpoint is a candidate for a particular task deployment.

  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1516
  • US Classification:
    709202, 709223
  • Abstract:
A method of monitoring in a distributed computer network having a management server servicing a set of managed computers. The method begins by deploying a management infrastructure across a given subset of the managed computers, the management infrastructure comprising a runtime environment installed at a given managed computer. At the given managed computer, the routine executes a monitoring agent in the runtime environment to determine whether a given threshold has been exceeded. Then, a given action is taken if the given threshold has been exceeded. The monitoring agent is executed upon receipt of an external event or as a result of an internal timer. Execution of the monitoring agent involves taking a measurement, comparing the measurement against the given threshold, and then taking some corrective action if possible.
  • System For Assigning Data Processing Activities To Users Through An Interactive Display Interface Dynamically Granting Access Only During Activity To Normally Inaccessible Resources Needed For Activity

  • Abstract:
A method for limiting access to the proprietary resources of an outsourcer or distributor to the participants/operators having assigned outsourced activities requiring such resources. Access is limited only to the assigned activity execution and prevented from misuse of the resources for unauthorized purposes. Reliable tracking of the lent out resources is provided and access is terminated simply when the associated activity has been completed. An implementation is provided for assigning performable activities to a user or operator together with interactively displaying in association with each activity, the computer resources needed to carry out the respective activity in combination with means, responsive to said assigning means, for granting to said operator through this interactive display, access to the computer resources needed to carry out said assigned performable activity only during the carrying out of said activity, whereby the displayed resource is removed from the display and, thus, becomes inaccessible upon the completion of the activity.
