Abstract:

A method for detecting manufacturing marks on sputtered disks includes rotating the disk three hundred and sixty degrees. As the disk rotates, a sensor is used to detect a quantity of manufacturing marks formed on the outer edge of the disk. If there are less than four manufacturing marks on the edge of the disk, a signal is sent to a warning device to indicate that the disk is defective. The lack of a manufacturing mark is an indication that a gripper used to hold the disk within the sputtering chamber during the sputtering process is bent or otherwise misaligned. As such, a signal is also sent to the warning device to indicate that the grippers within the sputtering chamber must be inspected.

Abstract:

A system for improving manufacturing yields, which includes at least one manufacturing facility into which unprocessed parts enter. An identification plan is provided for the unprocessed parts, by which each unprocessed part is given unique and traceable unprocessed part identification data. Processing equipment is included by which the unprocessed parts are turned into processed parts. There are identification plans for the processing equipment and for the processed parts by which each piece of equipment and each processed part is given unique and traceable processing equipment identification data. At least one computer terminal is connected to a database into which the unprocessed parts identification data, the processed parts identification data and the processing equipment identification data is stored, and related. This data is retrievable to allow processed parts with defects to be traced to the processing equipment by which it was processed for repair or modification of the processing equipment.

Abstract:

A method of yield improvement for manufactured products includes providing an identification plan for parts and processing equipment, whereby each part and each piece of equipment is given unique and traceable identification data. A database is provided into which the parts identification data and the processing equipment identification data are stored, and related. The parts are processed in at least one processing stage by the processing equipment to yield processed parts, and the processed parts are tested for defects. Problems are then identified through the testing of the processed parts. The related parts identification data and the processing equipment identification data are retrieved from the database, and the data is analyzed to trace the parts to the appropriate processing equipment. Corrections and repairs are made to the processing equipment to correct the problems. Improvement to yield of the manufactured products is then confirmed.

Abstract:

The method of the invention for servo track writer calibration consists of writing magnetic servo tracks and performing optical analysis using Kerr effect microscopy. After the servo tracks are written on the disk, the disk is placed in the optical inspection device having Kerr effect microscopy capability which allows the operator to directly observe the location of “track zero” which is conventionally the track nearest to the inner diameter (ID) of the disk. An embodiment of the method comprising measuring a plurality of distances from a selected points on the track zero to obtain an average measurement indicative of a position of track zero on the magnetic disk. The measured data is then used to calibrate or adjust the servo writer.

Abstract:

A method is presented for controlling process delay times between a) thin film deposition and lubricant application, and b) lubricant application and abrasive polishing. Applicants have discovered that for certain lubricants, a minimum delay time after the overcoat has been deposited before the lubricant is applied increases the number of disks passing the glide test after abrasive polishing. In addition, applicants have discovered that for certain lubricants, the abrasive polishing should take place within a maximum time window following the application of the lubricant. A computerized work-in-progress tracking system is preferably used to implement the method of the invention.

Abstract:

The present invention is a method for defect locating marking and analysis of thin film hard disks. Initially, the hard disk is disposed in a disk drive and the disk is formatted with sector identification lines and data written into data tracks. During the data writing process a disk surface defect is identified by its sector, track and byte location. The hard disk is then marked such that the defect can be located at a later time. The erased bands aid in later locating the defect. After the defect locating erasures have been completed for each defect found on the disk, the disk is removed from the hard disk drive for further analysis. The disk is then placed on the stage of a microscope and ferromagnetic fluid is applied to the disk in order to make the erased tracks visible. The ferromagnetic fluid is applied out to the end of the track erasure of the track that includes the defect, without application of ferromagnetic fluid to the defect itself. As a result, the specific defect is visually located for further analysis in its original condition, without disk erasure over it, and without the application of ferromagnetic fluid upon it.

Abstract:

A hand mounted player's protective palm pad has palm configured two piece pad and two fastening loops secured to the pad, one small loop and one much larger. The one small loop encircles the base of the user's forefinger; the much larger loop extends about the back of the user's hand. These two loops hold the player's protective palm pad constantly and securely in the desired position on the user's palm, remote from the user's thumb. In other embodiments the pad can be made larger or smaller; the comfiguration can be made different to provide more palm or finger protection; additional finger loops and/or hand loops may be secured to the pad; and the protective palm pad can be made to be worn on either hand.

Abstract:

The hard disk drive manufacturing method of the present invention includes an initial determination of the orientation of the individual hard disks during the various processing steps and disk drive assembly steps. Specifically, the orientation of the hard disks in the assembled disk drive is ascertained, such that the direction of arcuate writing paths on the disk surface is known. Additionally, the orientation of non-random arcuate micro-scratches that appear on the disk surface during disk processing is ascertained. Where the arcuate path of the micro-scratches corresponds to the arcuate writing paths on a disk surface, the disk process is altered to effectively reorient the disk in its mounting in the hard disk drive. The result of the process alteration is that there is no longer a correspondence between the arcuate path of the micro-scratches and the arcuate written data paths, and a significant reduction in the number of defects on the surface of the hard disk is obtained.
