The supporting characters are little more than cartoons, and some talented actors are made to look silly playing them, including Tony Shalhoub as the Russian apparatchik Koltsov, Joan Chen as Madam Chiang Kai-shek and Molly Parker as a shrewish Pauline Hemingway, the wife who preceded Gellhorn.

Review: Costner, Paxton Feud Like McCoys; Kidman Takes Normandy
