Abstract:

A radiation detector having glass emitting photons by scintillation in response to incident neutrons and/or electromagnetic radiation of at least about 1 keV, and a system associated with the glass for detecting the presence of photons emitted by scintillation. The glass ceramic material is a fluoride glass matrix having nanocrystalline particles distributed therein substantially all of which are in a phase that scintillates with average diameters of less than about 100 nm in a fluorozirconate matrix. Various metals are disclosed for the ceramic particles and methods of manufacture are also disclosed.

Abstract:

Easy-threading sewing needles, in two embodiments, for hand needles and sewing machine needles are disclosed, as well as a method for making the easy-threading structure. The needles have eyes defined by sidewalls, one of which is slit along a plane which passes from the outer surface into the eye and divides the sidewall into an elongated inner clip member and a conforming retaining member. The clip member is mechanically spring-biased against the retainer but may be resiliently bent inward to open the slit by pressing a thread loop against the outside of the sidewall. The clip springs back against the mating surface of the retainer as soon as the thread enters the eye and the pressure is removed. The machine needle includes an off-center eye and the thread trap formed on the thinner sidewall, the point of the needle being formed off-center under the eye and a smooth shoulder projecting outward just under the entrance to the slit. In making the thread trap, maleable needle stock is slit prior to tempering and the clip and retainer members reversed in position by moving the clip outward.

Abstract:

A feeding tube assembly for nasogastric and nasointestinal enteral feeding with a pH indicator carried by a stiffener used for inserting the feeding tube into a patient. After insertion of the end of feeding tube assembly into the patient but before the stiffener is withdrawn from the tube, the pH indicator is in communication with body fluids which ooze into the lumen of the tube through perforations provided along the distal end thereof. Misplacement of the end of the tube in the patient's tracheobronchial tree is ruled out by noting that the pH indicator has changed color indicating that it has contacted stomach acid.
