Abstract:

A method and system for quantifying the extent of vaso vasorum with contrast enhanced ultrasound and correlating that quantitative value to the risk for vascular disease is provided. An ultrasound contrast agent is administered to a subject and images are obtained using an imaging method that identifies the uptake of the contrast agent by tissues. The amount of uptake is measured and the corresponding signal intensity change correlated with the amount of vaso vasorum present. Additionally, deformations of the vasculature are measured from the series of ultrasound images and this information is coupled with the quantification of the vaso vasorum to determine a risk index indicative of a subject's risk to vascular disease.

Abstract:

A system and method for automating the selection of end-diastolic ultrasound frames (EUFs] and regions of interest (ROIs] of the common carotid artery (CCA] to measure the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT] is provided. The EUFs are selected based on the QRS complex of the ECG signal associated with an ultrasound video, and the ROI is detected based on image intensity and curvature of the carotid artery bulb. The CIMT and a vascular age of a patient is calculated and displayed on a report.

Abstract:

Methods, systems, and media for determining carotid intima-media thickness are provided. In some embodiments, a method for determining carotid intima-media thickness of a carotid artery is provided, the method comprising: receiving a frame from a plurality of images, wherein each of the plurality of images includes a portion of the carotid artery; receiving a user selection of a location with the frame; setting a region of interest, based on the received user selection; detecting a first border and a second border within the region of interest; applying one or more active contour models to the first border and the second border to generate a smoothed first border and a smoothed second border; and calculating the intima-media thickness based at least in part on the smoothed first border and the second smoothed border.
