Disclosed is a diaphragm having a porous, hydrophobic fluorocarbon matrix, an intermediate layer or film of a hydrophilic fluorocarbon resin on the surfaces of the matrix, and a hydrous oxide of zirconium contained in the void volumes of the matrix. Abstract:

Disclosed is a bipolar electrolyzer having a plurality of bipolar units space from and parallel to each other with a pair of bipolar units defining a single electrolytic cell therebetween. Each of the bipolar units has an anode on one surface and a cathode on the opposite surface, so that the cathode of one bipolar unit faces the anode of the next adjacent bipolar unit. A steel plate is one exposed surface of the backplate and a silicon sheet in electrical contact with the steel plate is the opposite exposed surface of the backplate. The steel plate and the silicon sheet are bonded together with a suitable electroconductive bonding material.

Abstract:

Dibasic calcium hypochlorite scale found on the surfaces of process equipment used for the manufacture of calcium hypochlorite is removed chemically by submerging the scale in water, thereby to form an aqueous alkaline solution, and controllably adding hydrochloric acid to the alkaline solution under conditions of agitation and while maintaining the pH of the solution at at least 7, thereby to solubilize the dibasic calcium hypochlorite scale without producing substantial amounts of elemental chlorine.

Abstract:

Described is particulate halogen-containing material, e. g. , calcium hypochlorite, containing from about 0. 1 to about 10 weight percent of colorant-treated particulate inorganic water soluble salt, e. g. , sodium chloride. The colorant used with the sodium chloride salt is resistant to oxidation by the halogen specie in the material and is water dispersible. The amount of colorant used is from about 0. 01 to about 5 weight percent, based on the inorganic salt. Preferred are the water dispersible phthalocyanine colorants.
