Abstract:

Electrical characteristics of the inputs to VLSI semiconductor chips can be modified after the chips are fabricated and mounted into multichip modules (packages), at which time the required characteristics are known accurately. The changes are accomplished by incorporating special circuitry at the chip inputs during their design combined with the use of `boundary-scan` type circuitry that has recently been put in place for device testing. The circuitry allows the impedance characteristics of the chip's receiver to be modified to match that of the driving source and the wiring interconnections between the chip and source. The test circuitry is used to provide the logical signals to selectively switch the circuits to the proper configuration. This enables optimally designed interconnections between the input and output circuitry on the chips and thereby avoids the necessity for costly re-designs.

Abstract:

A method and system are disclosed for selectively altering the functional characteristics of a data processing system without physical or mechanical manipulation. A data processing system is first manufactured having a predetermined set of functional characteristics. A multibit alterable code which includes a functional characteristic definition is then initially loaded into physically secure, nonvolatile memory within the data processing system, utilizing an existing bus, or a fusible link which may be opened after loading is complete. The functional characteristic definition is loaded from nonvolatile memory into a nonscannable register within a secure portion of a control logic circuit each time power is applied to the data processing system and the definition is then utilized to enable only selected functional characteristics. Alternate functional characteristics may thereafter be selectively enabled by entering a security code which matches one of a number of preloaded codes and an encoded alternate functional characteristic definition. The alternate functional characteristic definition may be enabled on a one-time, metered, or regularly scheduled basis and variable capability data processing systems may be implemented in this manner utilizing a single manufactured system, without the necessity of manufacturing and storing multiple data processing system models.

Abstract:

A means and apparatus for connecting resilient conduit is provided in which a first section of resilient tubing of internal dimensions sufficient to slide over the conduits and having two grooves, one spaced from each end of the internal surface of the section with each groove containing resilient gasket material substantially filling the groove to form a gasket around the conduit is slid into place so that the conduits to be connected are juxtaposed within the first section of tubing between the gasketed grooves. An encasing tubing is placed around said first section of tubing at least overlying the resilient gasket material. A pair of split metal clamping rings with one ring adjacent each end of the first tubular section and joined by a plurality of spacer bars united at each end to the clamping rings is fitted over the encasing tubing in relation to apply pressure on the encasing tubing when the split rings are united in clamped position. Each ring has grooves between flattened areas of the inner surface which upon uniting of the rings in clamped position cause deformation of the conduit surface into the grooves thereby aiding in holding the clamped conduits in position.

Abstract:

This specification describes means that permit the variation of circuits, particularly latch circuits, used in programmable logic array chips (PLAs). The latch circuits are changeable to enable the selection of one of three different latch configurations to be used or in combination on the same PLA chip. The differences in the circuit configurations of the different types of latches occur only in metallization pattern of the chip so that chips with different latch configurations can be manufactured with a minimum of different processing steps.

Abstract:

A means for adapting the end of a plastic pipe for coupling is provided in which the pipe is recessed circumferentially and the recessed area is further indented with three circumferential grooves. A first metal sleeve is shrink-fitted into the recessed area adjacent to the first groove furthest removed from the end of the pipe and further removed from the end of the pipe than this groove. A gasket ring of resilient material is inserted into a second groove which is between the first groove and the end of the pipe. A second metal sleeve having the same outside circumference as the third metal sleeve is shrink-fitted into the recessed area adjacent the first groove, encasing the gasket ring in the second groove, and indented into a first groove near the end of the pipe leaving a circumferential indentation spaced from the end of the pipe to receive one portion of a coupling device. A split locking ring having the same outside circumference as the first metal sleeve is inserted in the first groove and a third metal sleeve having an inner circumference sufficient slidably to engage the outer circumference of the first metal sleeve is slipped into position encasing the lock ring in the groove and overlapping the other two sleeves. Upon fixably attaching the third sleeve into position the plastic pipe is effectively covered with a metal adapter so that upon juxtaposition of two such adapted pipes a gasketed, split-ring coupling can be positioned into the grooves in the metal sleeves of the abutted pipe to lock the pipe in pressure-tight union.
