Compositions and methods for enhancing disease resistance in plants are provided. The method involves transforming a plant with an avirulence gene or alternatively with an avirulence gene and the complementing resistance gene. A pathogen inducible promoter or alternatively a weak constitutive promoter is used to control the desired level of disease control in the plant. Transformed plants, plant cells, tissues, and seed are also provided having enhanced disease resistance.

Abstract:
The present invention provides promoters from plants capable of driving gene expression in plant cells. The promoters vary in strength and in tissue specificity, and can be used to facilitate the development of transgenic plants in which tissue preferred expression, constitutive expression, and the strength of transgene expression is either more or less critical.

Nucleic Acids For Inducing Expression Of Transcripts And Proteins And Methods For Making And Using Them
The invention provides nucleic acids and polypeptides for enhanced expression of nucleic acids and proteins. In one aspect, the sequences serve as transcription and translation enhancers or stabilizers, and can be incorporated in expression constructs at or near the translation control elements. The invention provides methods of producing mRNA (transcripts) and proteins. The invention provides methods of discovering new enhancer elements.
