Abstract:

Methods are described for removing contaminates from aqueous industrial wastewater process streams, specifically industrial laundries to yield a less contaminated aqueous effluent for discharge to a sewer and reduce the sludge generated therefrom. A premixed medium/high molecular weight and medium/high charged cationic coagulant solution polymer and an inorganic aluminum species is injected into the wastewater, and after at least a two second delay, a high molecular weight highly charged anionic flocculent polymer solution is injected into the wastewater which reduces sludge generation, while maintaining or exceeding effluent quality. Also, no coagulant, flocculent or sludge aids are needed to attain the results and the sludge can be dewatered in a plate and frame press.

Abstract:

A method is provided for clarifying wastewater containing contaminants including soluble organic compounds and insoluble organic compounds. The wastewater is treated with a paculant admixture including a cationic coagulant polymer and powdered activated carbon. The cationic coagulant polymer is polydiallydimethylammonium chloride, poly quaternary amine, and/or a starch-based organic polymer. After an at least 2 second delay, a flocculent is added to the wastewater to achieve (i) microcoagulation of the cationic coagulant polymer with the contaminants to form coagulated particles having an effective mass and cationic charge to react with an anionic flocculent to be added thereafter, and (ii) absorption of the soluble organic compounds on the powdered activated carbon. The anionic flocculent as added and reacted with the coagulated particles to form a sludge, containing agglomerated particles including the coagulated particles and powdered activated carbon, of sufficient size for mechanical removal. The sludge is removed to provide clarified wastewater.

Abstract:

In a facility producing a liquid stream containing solids and/or semisolids that is passed through a separator including a vibratory screen with screen openings sized to allow the flow of the liquid stream through the screen while capturing the solids and/or semisolids from the liquid stream, a cleaning system is provided that includes at least one cleaner element constructed and arranged in the separator to allow impact of the cleaner element against the vibratory screen to dislodge at least a portion of the solids and/or semisolids occluded in the screen openings during use of the separator. The cleaner element is larger in size than the screen openings and is made at least in part of non-synthetic animal hide (e.g., leather), synthetic animal hide, or a combination thereof. A method and a separator are also provided.
