Abstract:

Biomolecule analysis using anodic oxidation of aqueous sodium 9,10-diphenylanthracene-2-sulfonate (DPAS) and 1- and 2-thianthrenecarboxylic acid (1-THCOOH and 2-THCOOH) in the presence of tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) as a coreactant in aqueous solution produces electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL). In addition, the cathodic reduction of DPAS in the presence of peroxydisulfate (S O ) as a coreactant also produces ECL in an acetonitrile (MeCN)-water solution (1:1 by volume). The oxidation of chlorpromazine (CPZ) produces an ECL emission in the absence of an added coreactant following an unprecedented âself-annihilationâ mechanism.

Abstract:

The present invention is a calibration and measurement system designed primarily for use in the rapid evaluation and characterization of open or visible wounds in patients. The invention in a preferred embodiment comprises a set of colored concentric rings, constructed of paper or synthetic material. The practitioner removes only as many rings, from the center outward, until the entire wound is visible within the open aperture at the center of the remaining rings. The area dimensions of the wound are then read out from the size of the inner remaining ring. Photography optionally records the wound appearance and size. A related system is developed for linear dimensioning of wounds. This invention is also designed to standardize the color scheme for accurate photography wound description. This color scheme is also applicable to a linear device to accurately describe wound size. The invention is also useful in forensic and accident investigations.

Abstract:

Expansile hydrogel intraocular lenses are heated above their elastic deformation temperatures and deformed into an elongated configuration having at least one reduced dimension suitable for insertion through a small surgical incision. The lenses are allowed to cool in this configuration and retain the deformed shape prior to surgical implantation. Following implantation the lenses hydrate into an enlarged elastic form reassuming the original lens configuration of full capsule size.

P. sub. 2 O. sub. 5 values occluded in the crystals which are precipitated during the hemihydrate process for manufacturing phosphoric acid are recovered by dissolving and recrystallizing the hemihydrate crystals as dihydrate crystals in an acidic environment having a P. sub. 2 O. sub. 5 concentration of from about 0. 1% to about 10% and a free sulfate concentration in the range of about 0. 1% to about 10%. Water is used to wash the dihydrate filter cake, and the filtrate from this wash is used to redissolve the hemihydrate crystals. The free sulfate values are preferably supplied to the dihydrate crystallizer as sulfuric acid.

Abstract:

A method and system are disclosed for integrating multimedia presentations into an object oriented user interface which includes multiple polymorphic objects which each have associated encapsulated data and functionality. Multiple separate user selectable data views are defined for each object which provide different views of the data associated with an object. Selection by a user of an audio or video data view for an object results in the provision of a multimedia presentation by automatically coupling audio or video data to an appropriate device. Audio data may be directly associated with an object or derived in response to selection of an audio data view, by means of a text-to-speech process, or other similar technique. Encapsulating multimedia data within an object integrates multimedia presentation capability within an object without requiring separate audio or video objects which must be manipulated by the user.

Non-hydrolyzable, hydrophilic, heterocyclic cross-linking agents for cross-linking vinyl comonomers are provided. The cross-linked copolymers form optically transparent, high water content, and high refractive index hydrogels having long term stability which are useful as intraocular lenses and superabsorbents.
