Abstract:

A system of downhole communication and control is provided in methods and associated apparatus for data retrieval, monitoring and tool actuation. In a described embodiment, an item of equipment installed in a tubular string has a first communication device associated therewith. A tool conveyed into the tubular string has a second communication device therein. Communication is established between the first and second devices. Such communication may be utilized to control operation of the tool, retrieve status information regarding the item of equipment, supply power to the first device and/or identify the item of equipment to the tool.

Abstract:

A downhole force generator includes a longitudinal force generating and transmitting assembly (including, for example, a motor and a threaded shaft that is extended and retracted by operation of the motor) adapted to be moved into a well. A controller is also adapted to be moved into the well and is connected to the longitudinal force generating and transmitting assembly. The controller includes a memory containing a program to control the longitudinal force generating and transmitting assembly to obtain at least one desired operating condition in the well. A sensor can be connected to the controller. A self-contained power source adapted to be moved into the well can also be used. A method of providing an infinitely variable linear force in an oil or gas well is a particular application for such a downhole force generator. This particular method comprises sensing in the well a parameter responsive over a continuum to changes in a selected operating condition in the well.

Abstract:

In a subterranean well a one-trip production zone perforation and proppant fracturing operation is carried out using a workstring-supported perforation gun lowered into a casing nipple located in the production zone. Firing of the gun creates spaced apart aligned sets of perforations extending outwardly through a side wall portion of the workstring, the nipple, the surrounding cement, and into the production zone, after which the gun falls into and is retained in an underlying gun catcher portion of the workstring. While an overpull force is maintained on the workstring above the perforations, a proppant slurry is pumped down the workstring, out its sidewall perforations, and outwardly through the aligned perforation sets formed in the nipple, cement and production zone. After stimulation of the production zone, the workstring and the spent perforation gun that it retains are pulled up, with the upwardly moving workstring positioning a sliding closure device inwardly over the perforations to isolate the stimulated production zone until the well is readied for production. Illustrated alternate embodiments include the use of a low debris casing gun in place of the drop-off type perforating gun, the use of pre-formed wide wall perforations in the workstring side wall, and a one-trip perforation and production flow creating method in which the production zone stimulating step is eliminated.

Abstract:

A seal and seal assembly for use with well tools, such particularly as well packers, for sealing the annulus between the well packer mandrel and the wall of a well tubing such as casing. The seal is fabricated of an elastomeric-like material comprising fluorocarbon resins, poly arylene ketone, and carbon fibers mounted between end retainer assemblies each comprising a mesh anti-extrusion ring, a tapered mesh backup ring, and a metal backup shoe. The seal has internal longitudinally spaced V-shaped recesses to cause the seal to buckle radially outwardly as it is compressed longitudinally to increase the stress along the middle portion of the seal where the seal meets the well casing inner wall. The seal is useful at high temperatures and pressures such as 550 degrees F. and greater than 15,000 psi.

A hydraulically set well packer. The setting sleeve is releasably locked to the packer mandrel to prevent premature setting while the packer is being lowered to its desired downhole location. The setting sleeve is unlocked by increasing fluid pressure within the packer mandrel above a preselected value. The length of the setting sleeve can be easily adjusted to accommodate additional piston units, changes in mandrel length, and various packing elements.
