Abstract:

A volume of a wound is estimated using a dynamic pressure response measured during instillation of fluid to the wound using a negative pressure wound therapy system. A previously estimated wound volume may be used to detect and prevent overfill of fluid to the wound during future instillation events. For example, real-time pressure measurements may be compared to model data representative of expected pressure at a wound having a volume equal to the previously estimated wound volume, with instillation being stopped if the observed pressure varies from the expected pressure. A comparison of a total volume of fluid instilled to the wound may also be compared to the previously estimated wound volume to prevent overfill. The comparison of wound volume estimated based on an instillation event may also be compared to a wound volume estimated using other methods to provide a higher confidence wound volume estimate.

Abstract:

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for providing negative pressure with instillation fluids to a tissue site are disclosed. Some embodiments are illustrative of an apparatus or system for delivering negative-pressure and/or therapeutic solution of fluids to a tissue site, which can be used in conjunction with sensing properties of fluids extracted from a tissue site and/or instilled at a tissue site. For example, a system may comprise a tissue interface adapted to be coupled to a source of instillation fluid and a dressing interface having a therapy cavity that includes a pH sensor, a humidity sensor, a temperature sensor, and a pressure sensor embodied on a single pad within the dressing interface to provide data indicative of acidity, humidity, temperature and pressure at the tissue site. Such apparatus may further comprise algorithms for processing such data for detecting leakage and blockage conditions as well as providing information relating to the progression of healing of wounds at the tissue site. An illustrative method may comprise disposing the tissue interface at the tissue site and the therapeutic cavity in fluid communication with the tissue interface. The method may further comprise instilling fluid to the therapy cavity and then sensing the pressure, humidity, temperature, and the pH of the fluids adjacent the tissue interface. The method may further comprise determining various flow characteristics of the system by using a processing element electrically coupled to the sensors for transmitting property signals from the sensors to a controller configured to assess the property signals in order to identify the flow characteristics.

Abstract:

In one example embodiment, a wound imaging system includes a user interface, a computer processor, and an active contouring module. The user interface is configured to display an image of a wound acquired by the wound imaging system and selectively receive inputs from a user defining an initial perimeter of the wound. An active contouring module is configured to operate on the computer processor to receive the inputs defining the initial perimeter of the wound, identify features of the image on opposing sides of the initial perimeter of the wound, and identify an actual perimeter of the wound based on the initial perimeter of the wound and the identified features. The user interface is further configured to display, on the image of the wound, the actual perimeter of the wound as identified by the active contouring module and selectively receive inputs from the user to modify the actual perimeter of the wound.

Abstract:

Systems and methods for providing negative-pressure therapy with fluid instillation therapy and, more specifically, scheduling and controlling both the negative pressure therapy and the fluid instillation therapy are described. The method may comprise applying negative pressure to the dressing based on an initial therapy configuration, and monitoring negative pressure parameters associated with the application of negative pressure to the dressing to identify negative pressure alarm conditions. The method may further comprise applying instillation fluid to the dressing based on the initial therapy configuration, and monitoring instillation parameters associated with the application of instillation fluid to the dressing to identify instillation alarm conditions. Both may include modifying the initial therapy configuration to generate a modified therapy configuration in response to the negative pressure and instillation alarm conditions identified.
