Abstract:The flow rate of blood in an implantable blood pump is determined at least in part based on a parameter related to thrust on the rotor of the pump. The parameter may be a parameter related to displacement of the rotor along its axis, such as a function of the back electromotive force generated in one or more coils of the stator. The back electromotive force may be measured during open-phase periods of a particular coil or set of coils, during which no power is applied to the coil or set of coils by the motor drive circuit. The parameter related to thrust may be used in conjunction with the speed of rotation of the rotor, the magnitude of current supplied to the rotor, or both to determine the flow rate. The pump may be controlled responsive to the determined flow rate.

Abstract:A method and apparatus for differentiating and enumerating the five major sub-populations of leukocytes in a blood sample (i. e. , lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils and basophils) uses multiangle light scatter and DC (Coulter) volume measurements. Light scattering characteristics of the leukocytes are determined within five different angular ranges, all being lower than 40 degrees. The invention is particularly useful in differentiating and enumerating the basophil sub-population which has heretofore required more complex apparatus and/or chemical processing.

Abstract:A sensor assembly having senser fingers swingably mounted upon a rotatable support and resiliently biased to extend radially outward. In the three-finger embodiment, a detent assembly rotatable with the support detents the support through a 120 degree rotation when the nose of a signature engages the finger lying in the path of signature movement. A one-way clutch cooperates with the detent assembly to dampen movement of the fingers and cooperating rotatable support to prevent oscillation of the rotating members. The finger advanced to the detent position slides upon the adjacent surface of the last counted signature and is freely yieldable to prevent irregularities in the signature from causing an erroneous count.

Abstract:The present invention relates to kits and methods for calibrating a pump through performance of a thermal knockdown process including demagnetization of an impeller of the pump where the impeller is separate from the pump. By heat treating the impeller, a property of magnetic interaction of the pump is reduced in a repeatable manner. A kit includes a pump with impeller, a controller and an oven. The method generally involves an iterative process of testing the pump for a property related to magnetic interaction of the elements of the pump, removing the impeller from the pump, heating the impeller under controlled conditions, then placing the impeller back into the pump to repeat the test performed initially.
