Abstract:To assign a plurality of processes to a plurality of processors in a multi-processor computer system, a plurality of processes are attached to a memory segment shared between a plurality of processors. A spin cycle is initiated in the plurality of processes, where initiating the spin cycle causes a processor-intensive operation to be performed by each of the processes, and wherein performing the processor-intensive operation by the processes induces rescheduling to be performed. As part of the rescheduling, one or more of the processes are reassigned among the processors during the spin cycle.

Abstract:A cell phone is converted into a limited use camera. The camera is formed by removing the circuit board of a used, discarded cell phone; reprogramming the firmware memory of the cell phone to conform it to the intended camera use; and repackaging the cell phone in a functionally appropriate housing. The reprogrammed camera phone has the capability of transmitting a picture, via the Internet, to a website where the pictures can be viewed and downloaded for printing.

Abstract:A distributed facsimile information system for providing information subscribers with documents and other requested information. The system includes a central processing unit in communication with a central data base and a number of satellite data bases at remote locations. The central data base includes a plurality of data files containing digitally stored documents and other information, and each of the satellite data bases includes some of the data files contained in the central data base. A terminal including a touch-tone phone and a facsimile machine is situated at the location of each information subscriber. A request for information is made via the touch-tone phone, and the system prompts a user through a series of menus for input of information identifying the particular document requested. The central processing unit then determines which of the data bases contains the document and is closest to the requestor's terminal for transmission of the document.

Abstract:An intake valve lift control system for optimizing both rotational movement and inducted flow of a mixture inducted into the chambers of an internal combustion engine. The combustion chamber includes a mask partially surrounding the intake valve seat thereby imparting rotational movement to the inducted mixture. During light load engine operating conditions, maximum valve lift displacement is limited to the height of the mask such that rotational movement of the inducted mixture is maximized during the entire intake stroke of the intake valve. During heavy load engine operating conditions in which optimal flow is desire, maximum valve lift displacement is extended beyond the mask such that flow, rather than rotational movement, is optimized. Commencement of valve lift is also delayed during normal engine operations such that rotational movement of the inducted mixture is further optimized.

Abstract:A virtual vehicle sensor includes a neural network which produces a sensor output based on a linear combination of non-linear physical signals generated by conventional physical sensors. Instead of determining an output directly, the neural network determines the polynomial coefficients as functions of the physical signals indicative of other engine operating parameters. The sensor is manufactured using relatively limited data collection to calibrate a simulation model. The output of the simulation model is used for model-based mapping to generate more comprehensive maps used for training the neural network. The trained neural network is embedded in a controller and acts as the virtual sensor to monitor engine parameters which are difficult to measure or for which conventional physical sensors do not currently exist. The virtual sensor may be used to sense parameters such as in-cylinder residual mass fraction, emission levels, in-cylinder pressure rise during combustion, and exhaust gas temperature.
