The present invention provides cell-based screening assays designed to identify agents that regulate the activity of the polycystic kidney disease proteins encoded by the PKD-1 and PKD-2 genes and that may be useful in the treatment of polycystic kidney disease. The assays of the invention comprise the contacting of genetically engineered cells expressing a mutant or truncated PKD gene product with a test agent and assaying for a decrease in the PKD mediated mutant phenotype. Characteristics associated with such a mutant phenotype include increased adherence to type I collagen coated surfaces; apical expression of NaK-ATPase on the cell membrane; increased expression of β-2-NaK-ATPase; and decreased focal adhesion kinase (FAK) incorporation into focal adhesion complexes, and inability to form tubular structures in a gel matrix. To facilitate the screening methods of the invention, cells may be genetically engineered to express epitope tagged PKD gene products and/or epitope tagged PKD interacting proteins (PKD-IP). Such interacting proteins include, for example, focal adhesion complex proteins such as FAK, paxillin, vinculin, talin and the like.

The assays of the invention comprise the contacting of genetically engineered cells expressing a mutant or truncated PKD gene product with a test agent and assaying for a decrease in the PKD mediated mutant phenotype. Characteristics associated with such a mutant phenotype include increased adherence to type I collagen coated surfaces; apical expression of NaK-ATPase on the cell membrane; increased expression of -2-NaK-ATPase; and decreased focal adhesion kinase (FAK) incorporation into focal adhesion complexes, and inability to form tubular structures in a gel matrix. To facilitate the screening methods of the invention, cells may be genetically engineered to express epitope tagged PKD gene products and/or epitope tagged PKD interacting proteins (PKD-IP). Patient-Facing Mobile Technology To Assist Physician Achieve Quality Measures For Value-Based Payment
Systems and methods for managing healthcare treatment using closed-loop control are described. A method includes wirelessly receiving quality-of-care information from a patient mobile communication device, reporting the quality-of-care information to a quality tracking system, and receiving an incentive payment responsive to reporting the quality-of-care information to the quality tracking system. The quality-of-care information may relate to one or more quality-of-care indicators used to incentivize a provider or consumer of healthcare services. A patient may be alerted to the quality-of-care indicators for specific medical conditions. Personalized and specific notifications generated by an application residing in the patient's mobile device or running in the cloud may be communicated to the patient electronically, including prompts to the patient to take specific action in order to best manage a medical condition or prescribed treatment. A healthcare provider may be notified of a treatment or quality-of-care recommended action to be taken.

Abstract:
A method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for accessing electronic medical records are provided in which a portable computing device uniquely associated with a user authenticates an identification of the user and automatically retrieves information corresponding to the user from electronic healthcare records systems using the identification. The retrieved information may be combined with other information and electronically delivered to a healthcare provider or patient. Delivery may be initiated by the portable computing device and directed to a computing device of a healthcare provider or patient. Exchange of records and other information between the user and the provider is effected using a first channel to provide a network address of the records and cryptographic keys necessary to extract the records, and a second path to deliver the encrypted records. The first path may be implemented using a camera or optical scanner to read an encoded optical image.
