Abstract:
An olefin or a slack wax of 10 to 100 carbon atoms is oxidized by mixing said wax with a salt of an alkaline earth metal in an amount to provide 0.001 to 0.03 weight percent of the alkaline earth metal, the anion of the salt comprising 4 to 36 carbon atoms; heating the mixture to 100 to 180 C.; and supplying to the heated mixture a molecular oxygen-containing gas. The oxidation is conducted in the substantial absence of manganese or cobalt compounds. The oxidized wax may be esterified by reaction with an alcohol. The oxidized wax may be used in a coating composition.

A coating composition comprising an oxidized α-olefin having 16 to 40 carbon atoms and one or more carboxylic acid or ester groups; a hydrocarbon-soluble ester-containing polymer having at least one branch of 10 to 36 carbon atoms and having a number average molecular weight of 5000 to 300,000; a carboxylic acid of at least 10 carbon atoms; a salt of an alkylarylsulfonic acid; an oil in an amount sufficient to dissolve said metal salt; and optionally, a volatile diluent, provides good rust protection.

Abstract:
The invention relates to corrosion inhibitors, and more specifically corrosion inhibitors for coating compositions. The invention provides for coating compositions that have improved corrosion properties, including reduced flash rust during the application of the coating composition to a metal surface, and even improved corrosion inhibition in the resulting dried coating. The invention also provides for methods of making and using the described the compositions and the corrosion inhibitors thereof.
