Abstract:
Wireless communications relative to a vehicle using a wireless communications device, a pocket for holding the wireless communication device and an interface module in communication with the pocket are provided. The pocket can include a processor for translating communications between the wireless communications device and the interface module. The interface module has processing capability and can communicate with different pockets and thereby different wireless communications devices. In at least one embodiment, the interface module manages voice recognition and text-to-speech commands to facilitate hands-free communications in the vehicle. The interface module can function as a communications hub involving a number of vehicle subsystems. In a preferred embodiment, the vehicle subsystems are separately addressable using the interface module and/or other processing hardware/software. However, in communicating over the Internet, a vehicle IP address is utilized.

Abstract:
A self-contained data acquisition unit is provided for acquiring seismic data. The unit has a microprocessor and an antenna adapted to receive an electromagnetic signal. A decoder is connected with the microprocessor and adapted to convert received electromagnetic signals to dual-tone multiple-frequency (“DTMF”) digits. A geophone interface is provided with a geophone for collecting acoustic data incident on the geophone. A memory is connected with the geophone interface for storing a representation of the collected acoustic data and for storing a representation of a reference electromagnetic signal to be used in synchronizing acoustic data collected by other data acquisition units. A battery power source is connected with the microprocessor.

Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for acquiring seismic data. An ambient electromagnetic signal having a known time dependence is transmitted for propagation within a survey area. The ambient electromagnetic signal is received at distinct geographic locations with independently operating data acquisition units positioned at the distinct locations. Data representing acoustic signals received from the Earth at the distinct geographic locations are collected with the data acquisition units. The collected acoustic signals for the distinct geographic locations are synchronized by correlating the known time dependence of the propagated electromagnetic signal with time dependencies of the collected acoustic signals.

Abstract:
A heart rate monitoring system for use in sport and fitness training that includes a sensor belt worn on the waist of the user and a display device worn on the wrist of the user. The sensor belt has a pair of sensors that can be located on opposite sides of the body in various locations, such as near the kidneys, near the ilium bones in the pelvis, or on the front abdominal area of the user. Various signal processing techniques are employed to extract the degraded signal that is available at the waist area as compared to the chest area. These signal-processing techniques include bandpass filtering, an adaptive time window, a delayed transmission to allow for correction methods such as missed beat replacement and extra beat deletion, a lead off detection and adjustment algorithm, automatically adjustable gain control, and waveform detection and characterization.

Abstract:
Systems and methods are disclosed to automatically provide an audio sub-channel for a reading service to a visually impaired user. An audio service system includes a control module and a transmit module. The control module is operable to identify an audio sub-channel for a reading service available for reception within a broadcast area of a television content provider. The control module is further operable to identify a set of commands for a television tuner instructing the television tuner to tune to the audio sub-channel. The transmit module is operable to transmit the set of commands to the television tuner so the visually impaired user can listen to the audio sub-channel for the reading service.

Abstract:
A programmable universal signaling circuit for use in a universal channeling unit of a telephone network. The programmable universal signaling circuit uses a line converter and decoder circuit which under control of a microprocessor generates a unique set of configuration signals for configuring the universal signaling circuit into one of a plurality of standard signaling telephone circuits. The universal signaling circuit can be reconfigured either at the location of the universal channel unit or remotely.

Abstract:
A ground fault interrupter, operable in a measurement state, is employed with a DC circuit having a DC power source and a load. The DC source supplies DC current to the load along a supply current path and receives DC current from the load along a return current path. The ground fault interrupter comprises a first resistance in series with the supply current path, a second resistance in series with the return current path, and a current interrupter disposed in series with one of the current paths. The current interruptor interrupts the one of the current paths in response to actuation of the current interrupter. The ground fault interrupter further includes a measurement unit for measuring voltage drops across the respective first and second resistances during the measurement state, obtaining a measurement value using a difference between the voltage drops, and comparing the measurement value to a predetermined threshold. The measurement unit is constructed and arranged to actuate the current interrupter in response to the measurement value exceeding the predetermined threshold.
