    Aberrations in ultrasound imaging are modeled as a linear filter bank. The response of each linear filter is determined through blind system identification and is used to correct the aberration by applying a predistortion to the transmit signals and a compensation to the receive signals. To reduce computation, the blind system identification can be done through multiple levels. In a two-level implementation, the transducers in the array are grouped into subapertures. The blind system identification is applied in each of the subapertures to obtain the first-level response to each element. Using these responses, a common input is found for each subaperture, and blind system identification is applied to find the second-level responses. From the first-level and second-level responses, the response at each filter in the bank is determined.

    A method and apparatus for smoothing speckle pattern and increasing contrast resolution in ultrasound images is provided. Compared to other frequency compounding techniques, wide-band harmonic frequency compounding reduces speckle noise without sacrificing the resolution. Compared to spatial compounding, wide-band harmonic frequency compounding is more robust against tissue motion because sequential vectors rather than frames are summed together for compounding. The method and apparatus is implemented by transmitting two or more firings, combining two or more of the firings coherently to extract the tissue-generated harmonic components, detecting the outputs of the coherent sums and detecting one or more firings before coherent sum, and finally combining all detected outputs to form the compounded image. The method and apparatus sums wide-band fundamental and wide-band harmonic images after detection to form a compounded image. Unlike other frequency compounding methods, both transmit and receive signals are wide-band and no narrow-band filters are necessary.

    A non-linear response may be measured by transmitting a first pulse at an amplitude and transmit frequency, using an aperture having N elements. A first response is measured at a sub-harmonic frequency based on the transmit frequency. At least second and third pulses are transmitted at the amplitude and transmit frequency. At least second and third responses are measured at the sub-harmonic frequency. The second and third pulses have the same phase with respect to each other and use first and second sub-apertures that have different ones of the N elements. A sum of the elements within the first and second sub-apertures is equal to N. Alternatively, at least two pulses having the same aperture and different amplitudes may be transmitted, and the responses measured at the sub-harmonic frequency. The responses are combined to suppress linear echoes and determine a non-linear response.
