In a method for bonding a nonwoven web of cellulosic fibers by depositing a polymeric binder on the web, the improvement comprising (1) pretreating the cellulosic fibers by depositing up to about 10 wt % of an adhesion-promoting compound which demonstrates adhesion to cellulosic fibers of at least 200 g as measured by a cellophane laminate test, and (2) depositing on the pretreated cellulosic fibers and amount of an overcoat binder polymer sufficient to provide a bonded self-sustaining web.

A heterogeneous two component waterborne urethane/vinyl polymer composition, the method of making the composition, and the coating derived therefrom. The composition is a low or zero VOC composition containing a polyol stabilized non-functional, high Tg, aqueous vinyl polymer latex, a water dispersible polyisocyanate, and, optionally, a polyhydric alcohol. The composition is formed by emulsion polymerizing one or more vinyl monomers which will form a high Tg polymer, in the presence of an emulsifier containing one or more acid-containing polyols which have been neutralized with one or more reactive amines, and combining the resulting polyol-stabilized high Tg aqueous vinyl polymer latex with a water-dispersible polyisocyanate and, optionally, a polyhydric alcohol.

This invention is an emulsion composition comprised of acrylic ester monomers polymerized in the presence of fully hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) or a partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) provided the molecular weight of the low molecular weight poly(vinyl alcohol) is from 5,000 to 13,000 as the only stabilizer and a chain transfer agent. The improvement over the known prior art is the ability to incorporate fully hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) without the need for other surfactants or special processing.
