Abstract:
A reel-like format for transporting devices under test (DUT) into low power x-ray inspection system allows for high speed transportation and inspection that is several orders of magnitude faster than conventional systems. The system can be configured with a conveyor belt for handling of non-reel suitable DUTs. A stabilizing control mechanism precisely and accurately brings the tape (with components) into the x-raying window, that allows spatial displacement of a portion of the to-be-viewed tape.

Abstract:
Systems and methods are described for a compact x-ray system that uses optical energy for triggering x-ray generation rather than a traditional filament. A photocathode is illuminated and the ensuing electrons are directed to an anode resulting in x-ray generation, resulting in increased x-ray source durability. Pulsing, beam forming, scanning, varying x-ray characteristics, longevity of source and other desirable attributes not currently available in the state of the art are achievable, through the use of shaped, multi-materialed photocathodes, shaped, multi-materialed anodes, arrays of optical lines, and so forth, as some examples. Inexpensive, highly controllable sources such as solid-state lasers can be used, permitting a wide variety of applications and power levels.

A smart device “plug-in” radiation module(s) and/or methods are described wherein the bulk of non-sensor radiation circuitry is off-loaded to the smart device. By attaching the radiation module to the smart device via a power/communication port (for example, the smart device's headphone/microphone jack) robust attachment can be achieved as well as uniformity of attachment across different smart devices. A very small radiation module form factor is obtainable, not to mention a very significant cost reduction, allowing widespread adoption of radiation detectors as well as radiation geo-mapping. Power for the radiation module can be obtained from the smart device's headphone plug, utilizing the audio out (speaker) signal's power. Similarly, input to the smart device can be facilitated via the audio in (microphone) signal. Further, output of the radiation module can be visualized on the smart device, as well as control functions.

A cap for a radiation detection device of the type that utilizes a semiconductor medium includes a bias connection pad, a steering electrode, and a shielding layer. The steering electrode may be a grid steering electrode positioned parallel to the bias connection pad opposite a medium, or may be an electrode disposed perpendicular to the bias connection pad along the edge of a medium. The bias connection pad may be electrically connected or equipotent to the steering electrode. The cap may be formed of flexible circuit board, which may also connect the semiconductor detector to bias, detection or processing circuitry. The bias connection pad and the shielding layer can be maintained with fixed spacing to prevent vibration. A mezzanine card may be used to connect multiple detectors in a modular fashion.
