Philosophy:
Jong Kim was a twenty-one-year old junior in college when he decided that he wanted to become a doctor. His father had just passed away, and this sad event made him think seriously about his life and what he wanted to do with it. Years later, he says that one of the best things about his profession is seeing patients recover and return to health. Dr. Kim believes in maintaining a balance between work and family, is happily married to his wife Young An, with whom he has three sons. Twin Cities Heart and Lung's newest member, Dr. Kim is particularly interested in heart and lung transplants. When asked about a historical figure in surgery he'd like to meet, Dr. Kim mentioned John Wiegenstein, who was the driving force behind the establishment of emergency medicine as a separate discipline back in the 1960's and '70s. One of Dr. Kim's favorite memories in the hospital was helping a young girl who had been in a car accident and brought into the trauma ward where he was on call. Dr. Kim figured out that the girl had a punctured intestine (which the previous doctors on the case had not), and so he was able to in her recovery and make a difference in her life.

  • Filed:
    Jul 24, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    08/899883
  • Inventors:
Frederick Enns - Menlo Park CA
Eduardo J. Moura - San Jose CA
Jan Maksymilian Gronski - Palo Alto CA
    Ramesh Neelmegh - Fremont CA
Jong C. Kim - Sunnyvale CA
  • Assignee:
    Hybrid Networks, Inc.
  • International Classification:
    H04L 1228
  • US Classification:
    370401
  • Abstract:
An asymmetric network system manages bandwidth allocation and configuration of remote devices in a broadband network. A modular architecture of the system permits independent scalability of upstream and downstream capacity separately for each of the upstream and downstream physical paths. Allocation of downstream bandwidth to requesting devices is made according to bandwidth utilization by other devices, bandwidth demand by the requesting remote device, class or grade of service by the requesting remote device or bandwidth guaranteed to other remote devices. Configuration parameters remotely managed by the network include device addresses (global and local), transmission credit values, upstream channel assignment and upstream transmit power level. Further, management of device configuration profiles and bandwidth allocation occurs through control and response packets respectively generated by the network and the remote devices according to network operating software located at both ends. Control packets include poll packets that request, among other things, demand for an upstream transmission.

  • Abstract:
A user gains access to a private network by connecting to a network, either through a hardwired or wireless connection, and then initiates an Internet access request targeting any website. If the user is not already authorized for Internet access, then the user is sent to a first predetermined website that points the user to an authentication server accessible via the Internet. The authentication server sends the user an HTTP form pages requesting authentication information. When the user responds, a network monitoring device within the private network alters the form page to include the user's hardware address and an encoded ID based on the network's location. The authentication server forwards this data to a gate keeper server, which authenticates the new user and transmits an unblock message along with another encoded ID based on the network's location and the user's hardware address.

  • Abstract:
In one embodiment of the present invention, a halogen-free plasma etch processes is used to define a feature in a multi-layered masking stack including an amorphous carbon layer. In a particular embodiment, oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and carbon monoxide (CO) are utilized to etch the amorphous carbon layer to form a mask capable of producing sub-100 nm features in a substrate film having a reduced line edge roughness value. In another embodiment, the present invention employs an Oplasma pretreatment preceding the halogen-free amorphous carbon etch to first form an oxidized silicon region in a patterned photoresist layer to increase the selectivity of the amorphous carbon etch relative to a patterned photoresist layer containing unoxidized silicon.

Configuration packets instruct remote devices to assume an operational state or return status or statistical data. Response packets transmitted by the remote devices provide information to the network operations center for control purposes or to confirm the state of operation of remote devices, including channel operating statistics, errors, noise, etc. in order to remove or reallocate assigned upstream channels. Downloadable network operating software enables the network operator to upgrade remote operating software or to reconfigure the response profile of the remote devices. Account administration and usage reports are also generated. IP or ATM encapsulation, as well as forward error correction and encryption, are employed in the broadband network which may include an RF, satellite and cable medium with or without a telephony or router return path.
