Abstract:

The level of blood cholesterol in a living animal body in which a state of hypercholesterolemia exists is lowered by orally administering to said animal body a pharmaceutically effective amount of a polymer, which is (1) polymerized unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, or (2) a copolymer of (a) an unsaturated monomer having, for Example, 2 to 30 carbon atoms and, (b) an unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride or derivative thereof as exemplified by octadecene-l/maleic anhydride copolymer. Polymers having lipophilic properties are a preferred class. A typical dosage is an amount which represents in the range of from about 0. 01 to about 5. 0% of the diet.

Abstract:

The disclosure relates to a method of producing an immune response in a warm-blooded animal comprising administering to said animal from about 0. 1 to about 100 mg/Kg of body weight of a composition selected from the group consisting of a copolymer of olefin monomer and polycarboxylic anhydride having an average molecular weight of from about 300 to about 1500 in which said copolymer is derivatized to contain (a) half-amide, half-carboxyl acid groups and (b) imide groups in which said imide groups comprise from about 5% to about 40% by weight of said derivatized groups, and the pharmaceutically acceptable cationic salt derivatives of said derivatized copolymers.

Abstract:

The invention involves a method of weight control in which polymers of unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives are orally administered to interfere with assimilation of fat. Polymers which inhibit action of pancreatic lipase, especially cationic polymers such as dialkylaminoalkyl imides of alkene/maleic anhydride copolymers, are particularly useful.

Abstract:

Blood coagulation factors such as Factor VIII are separated from admixture with other blood proteins without producing activation of said coagulation factors by contacting with a water-insoluble, cross-linked polyelectrolyte copolymer of (a) C. sub. 2-18 unsaturated monomer and (b) C. sub. 4-12 unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride which is partially substituted at its free carboxyl or anhydride sites with amine-imides and in which substantially all the remaining free carboxyl or anhydride sites are blocked with alkoxyalkylamine to form alkoxyalkylimide units.

The disclosure relates to copolymers of olefin monomers having from 2 to about 4 carbon atoms and. alpha. ,. beta. -unsaturated polycarboxylic anhydrides having from 4 to about 6 carbon atoms, having an average molecular weight of from about 300 to about 1500, and derivatized to contain both a half-amide, half-carboxylate salt function and an imide function in which said imide function comprises from about 5% to about 40% of said derivatized function. The utility of these copolymers in the management of tumor therapy to prevent tumor recurrence or development of metastases by an immunoregulatory mechanism has been demonstrated in rats and mice.
