Abstract:

Infectious human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) were isolated in vitro from a pool of randomized sequences after sixteen or 21 cycles of selection and amplification. The ligands characterized exhibited high HCMV-binding affinity in vitro and effectively inhibited viral infection in tissue culture. Several ligands blocked viral entry. Their antiviral activity was also specific as the ligands only reacted with strains of HCMV, but not with the related herpes simplex virus 1 and human cells. Moreover, the ligands recognize several different epitopes. Thus, RNA ligands can function to bind to a human virus and block viral infection. The screening method may utilize the novel features of binding to intact infectious virus, partitioning the bound polynucleotides from unbound by passing through a porous filter, and enhancing the release of bound polynucleotides by treatment with protease.

Abstract:

Provided herein is a microfluidic device and related method for controlling flow of different fluid components of a fluid. The microfluidic device comprises an input channel, focusing channel and an assaying channel. The microfluidic device is adapted to separate a fluid into at least two fluid components, and is further adapted to detect a target material comprised within one of the fluid components. The method comprises providing a channel, the channel having a dimension which is a function of a dimension of one of the fluid components and deliver the fluid through the channel at a set flow rate.

Abstract:

A filter network having a variable cut-off frequency can be controlled in a way that allows the cut-off frequency to be changed gradually to avoid undesirable transient effects. An impedance network (such as a resistor network) that provides a plurality of impedance values is provided. Logic, and a corresponding method, are provided to change the impedance value gradually, such as on a step-wise basis, to change the cut-off frequency gradually. The size of the impedance step and the duration of the step can be preprogrammed, and may be different for different types of events that trigger the need for a frequency change. It may also be possible for those preprogrammed values to be initial values only, with the values changing under programmed control during the frequency changing process. Other values, such as the initial and target impedance values that determine the initial and target frequency, also may be programmable.

Abstract:

A semiconductor laser and a method of forming the same are provided. The semiconductor laser includes cladding layers comprised of hybrid materials systems which have different conduction to valance band gap offset ratios with respect to GaAs. As a result of these hybrid structures, lower junction voltages on both the n-side and p-side of the laser structure are achieved, thereby increasing the electrical to optical conversion efficiency of the laser.

Abstract:

A means of controlling the stress in a laser diode structure through the use of AlGaAsP is provided. Depending upon the amount of phosphorous in the material, it can be used to either match the lattice constant of GaAs, thus forming a strainless structure, or mismatch the lattice constant of GaAs, thereby adding tensile stress to the structure. Tensile stress can be used to mitigate the compressive stress due to material mismatches within the structure (e.g., a highly strained compressive quantum well), or due to the heat sink bonding procedure.

Abstract:

Techniques to schedule activities. In one method, a request to book an appointment for an activity in a particular schedule is initially received. In response, time slots available in the schedule for booking the activity are determined, and a set (all or a subset) of the time slots is provided as possible appointment choices. The time slots in the set are temporarily locked. A next set of time slots or more time slots may be requested (if the time slots provided are not acceptable or desirable), in which case additional time slots may be provided. Thereafter, a selection for one of the time slots is received. In response, the activity is booked in the selected time slot and previously locked time slots are released. The locked time slots may also be released if no selection is received after a particular amount of time.
