Abstract:

In a general aspect, a device includes a substrate, a light transmission formed on a top surface of the substrate, a first contact, and a second contact. The light transmission structure includes a first doped region; a second doped region doped oppositely to the first region; a lateral junction between a part of the first doped region and a part of the second doped region, the lateral junction oriented substantially perpendicular to the top surface of the substrate; and a vertical junction between a part of the first doped region and a part of the second doped region, the vertical junction oriented substantially parallel to the top surface of the substrate. The first contact is in electrical contact with the first region and the second contact is in electrical contact with the second region.

Abstract:

In one aspect, a method includes forming a pit in a top surface of a substrate by removing a portion of the substrate and growing a semiconductor material with a bottom surface on the pit, the semiconductor material different than the material of the substrate. The pit has a base recessed in the top surface of the substrate. In another aspect, a structure includes a substrate having a top surface, the substrate including at least one pit having a base lower than the top surface of the substrate, and a semiconductor material having a bottom surface formed on the base of the pit.

Abstract:

A system for measuring a shape of a target object includes a photonic integrated circuit and a light detector. The photonic integrated circuit includes a phase shifter configured to change a phase difference between a first portion of light and a second portion of light within the phase shifter, and an output element configured to output the light from the phase shifter directly toward the target object. The output element includes a first output waveguide configured to act as a first point source; and a second output waveguide configured to act as a second point source. The light detector is positioned to receive reflected light from the target object.

Abstract:

Described is the application of layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic assembly techniques to electrospun nanofibers in order to fabricate novel, breathable electrospun fiber-based chemical and biological detoxifying protective fabrics and filters. The combination of layer-by-layer electrostatic assembly and electrospinning technique allows one to take advantage of high specific surface area, light weight and breathability of electrospun fiber mats while simultaneously providing the versatility to incorporate different functional polyelectrolytes to achieve multifunctional coatings for both chemical and biological protection together. The functionalized fiber mats can be incorporated into breathable chemical and biological protective fabrics, filters and masks. In addition, LbL electrostatic coating of porous non-woven materials provides the versatility to generate multifunctional polymer-based membrane materials for other applications.

Also provided is a process of producing a photopolymerizable composition, the process comprising blending the ingredients of the prior sentence. Further provided is a process of producing a three-dimensional object, the process comprising the steps of: A) depositing the photopolymerizable composition according to the first sentence atop a carrier to obtain a layer of a construction material joined to the carrier which corresponds to a first selected cross section of the precursor; B) depositing additional photopolymerizable composition atop a previously applied layer of the construction material to obtain a further layer of the construction material which corresponds to a further selected cross section of the precursor and which is joined to the previously applied layer, C) repeating step B) until the precursor is formed, wherein the depositing of the photopolymerizable composition at least in step B) comprises introducing energy to a selected region of the photopolymerizable composition corresponding to the respectively selected cross section of the object.

Also provided is a process comprising combining: A) a polyurethane which comprises a reaction product of a first aliphatic polyisocyanate, a first polyol, and a thiol, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, and B) a urethane (meth)acrylate prepolymer, a reactive diluent, and a photoinitiator, wherein the urethane (meth)acrylate prepolymer comprises a reaction product of a second aliphatic polyisocyanate, a second polyol and an acrylate, wherein the reactive diluent comprises a (meth)acrylate monomer, wherein the first aliphatic polyisocyanate and second aliphatic polyisocyanate may be identical or different, and wherein the first polyol and the second polyol may be identical or different. The compositions of the invention may find use in 3D printing applications.

Abstract:

Provided is a polyisocyanurate thermoset comprising a mixture of an aliphatic polyisocyanate, optionally, an aromatic polyisocyanate; a core-shell rubber (CSR) impact modifier; and a catalyst, optionally, a mold release agent, wherein the aliphatic polyisocyanate is present in the mixture in an amount in excess of the aromatic polyisocyanate, and wherein the core-shell rubber (CSR) impact modifier is uniformly dispersible in the mixture. Also provided is a process of producing a polyisocyanurate thermoset comprising reacting in the presence of a catalyst, a mixture of an aliphatic polyisocyanate, optionally, an aromatic polyisocyanate, and a core-shell rubber (CSR) impact modifier, optionally, a mold release agent, wherein the aliphatic polyisocyanate is present in the mixture in an amount in excess of the aromatic polyisocyanate, and wherein the core-shell rubber (CSR) impact modifier is uniformly dispersible in the mixture. The thermosets of the invention may find use in producing composites such as wind turbine blades, yacht shells, window frames, door frames, ladder frames, telegraph pole cross arms, tent poles, solar cell frames, solar cell backsheets, radomes, highway guard rails, floor boards, pipes, telegraph poles, auto trunks, luggage holders, engine covers, golf clubs, tennis poles, badminton poles, bicycle frames, surfboards, and snowboards.
