Elephant gives birth to 251-pound baby elephant at the St. Louis Zoo
Mammal curator Martha Fischer notes that the 38-inches tall elephant is smaller than one of her siblings. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/ZKw9xI) reports that the elephant's 42-year-old mother, Ellie, gave birth late Friday after a two-year pregnancy.
"Ellie did a great job as always," St. Louis Zoo mammal curator Martha Fischer said Saturday. "By the time we can see the bulge, which is the feet coming through the birth canal, it's very fast. We were there to help if she needed us but she didn't. She's a star."
"Both Ellie and her baby are doing very well," said curator of mammals Martha Fischer. "Our staff is elated that the baby has arrived, and we are finally able to meet her after such a long gestation. We have welcomed a new member into our family.

Martha Fischer was head of that advisory group, but she is also in charge of all animals with hooves at St. Louis, and she knew that she would have to ship animals that had become precious to her to other zoos.
