Magnetic Recording Medium Having A Backside Coating Dispersion
A magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic substrate having a front side and a backside having a magnetic layer formed over the front side of the substrate, wherein the magnetic layer includes magnetic pigment particles, and a binder system therefor; the substrate also has a coating layer formed over the backside of the substrate wherein it is formed from a dispersion substantially free of tetrahydrofuran. In one embodiment, the backside coating formulation further comprises a crosslinking agent including a tetramethylol propane adduct and a 1,3-butanediol adduct in a solution of methylethylketone.

Abstract:
A purified polyurethane crosslinking agent and a magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate having coated thereon a front coat and a backcoat, said front coat comprising at least a magnetic coating and at least one of said front coat or said backcoat containing at least polymeric binder with pendant hydroxyl groups and a purified polyisocyanate crosslinking agent therefor comprising at least one diisocyanate compound adduct selected from the group consisting of adducts having a formula wherein: each A moiety is independently a divalent, organic linking group; and X is a divalent organic linking group, and a diisocyanate compound adduct of the formula wherein each A moiety is as defined above, and Y is a trivalent organic linking group.
Magnetic Recording Tape Configured For Improved Surface Lubricity
Meng C. Hsieh - Woodbury MN, US Matthew N. Fraley - Minneapolis MN, US Timo E. Mahonen - Stacy MN, US Larold L. Olson - Lindstrom MN, US
International Classification:
G11B 5/65 B05D 5/12
US Classification:
428835, 427131, 428834
Abstract:
A magnetic recording tape configured for increased surface lubricity includes an elongated substrate and a magnetic side disposed on the substrate. The magnetic side includes a magnetic recording layer defining an exposed magnetic recording surface opposite the substrate, and a support layer deposited on the substrate between the substrate and the magnetic recording layer. The support layer includes nano-particles configured to release lubrication to the exposed magnetic recording surface. In this regard, the support layer configures the exposed magnetic recording surface to have a surface lubrication to total lubrication ratio (SL ratio) of greater than about 5%.

US Classification:
4286940BU, 4286940BN, 4286940SL, 4286940BB
Abstract:
A dual-layer magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic substrate having a front side and a back side, the front side having at least one lower support layer formed over the substrate and at least one magnetic upper layer formed over the at least one support layer, wherein the magnetic upper layer includes magnetic pigment particles having an average particle length of less than about 75 nanometers, and a binder system for the magnetic particles, and the lower support layer includes at least one non-magnetic pigment and a binder system therefor, said binder system having a lower Tg from said binder system for said upper layer, said magnetic recording medium having two edges, said magnetic recording medium exhibiting substantially less cracking on said edges when compared to a dual-layer magnetic recording medium comprising a magnetic upper layer and a lower support layer having substantially identical binder systems.
