Abstract:
A preservation method for biological material having cell membranes includes reversibly porating the cell membranes; loading a bio-protective agent having bio-preservation properties to a predetermined intracellular concentration; preparing the bio-protective agent loaded biological material for storage; storing the biological material; recovering the stored biological material from storage; and reversing the cell membrane poration. H5 α-toxin, a genetically engineered mutant of α-hemolysin, may be used as a porating agent. Non-permeating sugars such as trehalose and sucrose may be used as the bio-protective agent.
System For Protecting Vehicles From Damage From Walls And Posts In Garages
A system for protecting the body and finish of a vehicle from colliding with the walls and posts of a garage has foam plastic padding attached to the wall and surrounding the posts. The material on the walls is a laminated polyethylene plank, with a backing of contact adhesive, so that it may be easily applied without tools. The padding for the columns is a hollow cylinder formed of the same material as the wall padding, but is formed into hollow cylindrical sheathes, with a slit along the entire major axis of the cylinder so that the sheathes may be forced onto the columns without modification. The cylindrical sheathes have an elastic memory, so that they may be deformed when inserting them onto the posts, but return to their cylindrical shape thereafter.
A coffee cup contains a temperature indicating device which informs the user as to whether the liquid within is too hot to comfortably drink, too cold, or otherwise. The temperature-indicating device is thermochromic, changing color as a function of temperature. In one embodiment, three segments are printed onto the cup lid using thermochromic ink. One of these segments changes color to indicate the liquid is cool, another when the liquid is warm, and a third when hot. In another embodiment, the cup itself is printed with the thermochromic ink, and changes color to indicate the temperature of the liquid. In yet another embodiment the material of which the cup and lid are made is itself thermochromic.

Abstract:
An imaging catadioptric spectrometer using a Mangin type lens and pupil lens adjacent to a grating. Electromagnetic radiation received by aperture slits is directed to a reflective portion of a Mangin type lens and redirected to a pupil adjacent a diffraction grating. Diffracted light is transmitted through a refractive portion of the Mangin type lens and through a corrector lens to image the spectral components of electromagnetic radiation onto a detector. The detector may be an enhanced detector utilizing an array of smaller spaced detectors. By balancing the powers of the lens elements, a single optical material may be used. In one embodiment, multiple aperture slits are spaced apart and decentered with respect to the optical axis permitting collection of opposing diffraction orders on two detectors. A wide field of view having a low F number is obtained with an operating wavelength range in the infrared from approximately 7.5 to 13.5 microns. The spectrometer is particularly suited to airborne applications.
A self-contained refrigerant package and method for shipment of a perishable or degradable product is described. The shipping package comprises an insulated container having therein a predetermined quantity of dry ice and a predetermined quantity of refrigerant gel that separates the product from the dry ice to prevent contact with the dry ice. The shipping package maintains the desired temperature range for periods in excess of 48 hours thus providing a safety factor for delays in shipment of such products.

A radio frequency (RF) device includes a first and second substrate, a first and second circuit, and an interconnect circuit. Each substrate having a first surface and an opposing second surface, a thickness of the second substrate being greater than a thickness of the first substrate, the second substrate having an overhang portion extending over the first surface of the first substrate. The first circuit disposed on the first substrate having a first contact terminal on the first surface of the first substrate. The second circuit disposed on the second substrate, the second circuit having a second contact terminal on the first surface of the second substrate. The interconnect circuit disposed on the overhang portion of the second substrate. The interconnect circuit including a vertical metal structure electrically connecting the first contact terminal to the second contact terminal.
