Abstract:
The system and method for detecting disconnection and occlusion of a tubing system of a patient ventilator detects disconnection of the tubing system, opens the exhalation valve, delivers an idle flow of breathing gas to the tubing system, disables breath triggering, and generates an alarm. A reconnection of the tubing system can also be detected, to initiate resumption of pressure supported inspiration. For occlusion detection, the pressure drop in the tubing system is determined by pressure sensors in the inspiratory and expiratory airways of the tubing system. The two pressure drop values are compared, and once occlusion is detected, an alarm is generated, and the ventilator responds to protect the patient from over distension. Abatement of the occlusion can also be monitored in a pressure based occlusion status cycling mode, and the ventilator can revert back to normal ventilation when either circuit occlusion or exhaust port occlusion are not detected.

Ventilation System Employing Synchronized Delivery Of Positive And Negative Pressure Ventilation
A ventilation system is adapted to synchronize the delivery of both positive pressure ventilation and negative pressure ventilation to a patient. The ventilation system is structured to produce a positive pressure flow of gas which is delivered to the patient's airway and a negative pressure flow of gas which is converted into a negative extrathoracic pressure. The negative extrathoracic pressure is communicated to the patient in synchronism with the delivery of the positive pressure flow of gas.
Ventilator Adaptable For Use With Either A Dual-Limb Circuit Or A Single-Limb Circuit
A ventilator of the present invention includes a housing, a gas flow generator disposed in the housing, a gas outlet port provided on an exterior surface of the housing, and a first conduit coupling the gas flow generator to the gas outlet port. A gas inlet port is also provided on an exterior surface of the housing. A second conduit couples the gas inlet port to a first exhaust valve in the housing that regulates a flow of exhaust gas from the second conduit. A second exhaust valve in the housing is coupled to the first conduit and regulates a flow of exhaust gas from the first conduit. A controller coupled to second exhaust valve causes the second exhaust valve to change a degree of flow restriction based on a respiratory phase of a patient coupled to the ventilator when the ventilator is operating in a single-limb ventilation configuration.

Abstract:
Methods and system for determining a likelihood of possible retinopathy of prematurity and alerting a caregiver of such likelihood may employ oxygen saturation measurements. According to certain embodiments, an apparatus for determining a risk of retinopathy of prematurity in a patient may include a processing unit. The processing unit is configured to determine whether an oxygen saturation level of the patient extends beyond an oxygen saturation threshold, determine an extent that the oxygen saturation level of the patient extends beyond the oxygen saturation threshold, and trigger an alarm when the extent that the oxygen saturation level of the patient extends beyond the oxygen saturation threshold exceeds a threshold at which the patient may be at risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity. The apparatus may also include a display unit configured to present the alarm in response to the trigger from the processing unit.
