    view source
  • US Patent:
    43701230, Jan 25, 1983
  • Filed:
    Jun 29, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/278238
  • Inventors:
    W. Andrew Dannels - Grand Island NY
Robert W. Bainbridge - Gainesville GA
  • Assignee:
Occidental Chemical Corporation - Niagara Falls NY
  • International Classification:
    B29G 300
  • US Classification:
    425543
  • Abstract:
The apparatus of the present invention includes a stationary assembly and a movable assembly. The stationary assembly is comprised of a stationary platen which has a heat plate, a temperature-controlled sprue bushing and a mold face positioned thereon. The movable assembly is comprised of a movable platen which has a heat plate mounted thereon and a mold face, corresponding to, and adapted to be aligned with, the mold face on the stationary assembly to form a partially open mold cavity. Means are provided to feed a supply of thermosetting molding material through the sprue bushing into the partially open mold cavity. Means are provided to completely close the mold cavity and place the apparatus in a compression stage. In the injection and in the compression stages, the discharge end of the sprue bushing is in direct feed relationship with the mold cavity, allowing flow of molding material from the sprue bushing into the mold cavity in the injection stage and flow of molding material from the mold cavity into the sprue bushing in the compression stage. Means are also provided for the subsequent retraction of the movable assembly to allow removal of a molded article and access to the mold area.

  • Appl. No.:
    6/118381
  • Inventors:
    W. Andrew Dannels - Grand Island NY
Robert W. Bainbridge - Gainesville GA
  • Assignee:
Hooker Chemicals & Plastics Corp. - Niagara Falls NY
  • International Classification:
    B29F 108
    B29G 300
  • US Classification:
    425543
  • Abstract:
An improved molding apparatus for injection-compression molding thermosetting materials is described. The apparatus comprises a stationary platen assembly, a moveable platen assembly and a feed nozzle assembly. The stationary assembly is comprised of a stationary platen member, a heated plate mounted on the support plate and a plurality of mold faces mounted on the heat plate. The movable assembly is comprised of a moveable platen member, a heated plate mounted thereon and a plurality of mold faces mounted on the heat plate aligned with the mold faces on the stationary assembly. The feed, or injection, nozzle assembly is comprised of a cylindrical nozzle member, having an internal temperature controlling means, and a plurality of feed outlets positioned on the periphery. The temperature maintained in the nozzle member is sufficiently high to maintain the thermosetting molding material within the nozzle member in a plasticized state and sufficiently low that no substantial curing or setting-up of the thermosetting molding material within the nozzle member in a plasticized state and sufficiently low that no substantial curing or setting-up of the thermosetting molding material takes place.

The apparatus of the present invention includes a stationary assembly and a movable assembly. The stationary assembly is comprised of a stationary platen which has a heat plate mounted thereon, a temperature-controlled sprue bushing mounted in the heat plate and a plurality of mold faces positioned on the heat plate surrounding the periphery of the sprue bushing. The movable assembly is comprised of a movable platen which has a heat plate mounted thereon and a plurality of mold faces, corresponding to, and adapted to be aligned with, the mold faces on the stationary assembly. Means are provided to move the movable assembly into close proximity with the stationary assembly to form partially open mold cavities. Means are provided to feed a supply of thermosetting molding material through the sprue bushing into a manifold area and into the partially open mold cavities. Means are provided to completely close the mold cavities and place the apparatus in a compression stage.

  • Filed:
    Dec 21, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/972189
  • Inventors:
    W. Andrew Dannels - Grand Island NY

    B29F 105
    B29F 108
  • US Classification:
    425543
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus are described. A thermosetting molding material, suitably a synthetic resin composition such as a phenolic molding composition, is initially heated and plasticized. The plasticized mass is passed as a stream through an injection nozzle which is maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to keep the mass in a plasticized condition but sufficiently low to avoid any substantial curing or setting-up of the mass. The plasticized mass is next passed through a temperature-controlled manifold maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to keep the mass in a plasticized condition but sufficiently low to avoid any substantial curing or setting-up of the mass. In the manifold the plasticized stream is divided into two or more smaller streams which are passed through a plurality of outlets into a plurality of partially open, heated molds. The mold cavities are maintained at temperatures sufficiently high to cure the thermosetting molding material. When the partially open molds are full, the feed stream is interrupted, and the molds are then completely closed to press and cure the plasticized material enclosed within them.

    B29F 108
  • US Classification:
    425543
  • Abstract:
An improved nozzle feed assembly is described. The assembly includes temperature-controlled member, preferably cylindrical in shape, having a closed end and an open end. The open end is fitted with standard threads to facilitate attachment of the nozzle member to the feed barrel of a conventional screw-type molding machine. The nozzle member has an internal temperature controlling means and a plurality of feed outlets positioned on the periphery of the nozzle member near the closed end. The temperature maintained in the nozzle member is sufficiently high to maintain the thermosetting molding material within the nozzle member in a plasticized state and sufficiently low that no substantial curing of the thermosetting molding material takes place. In an alternate mode, the assembly includes a sleeve member positioned around the periphery of the nozzle member and moveable to cover and uncover the feed outlets in the periphery of the nozzle member. In such alternate mode, means are provided to move the sleeve member from a position wherein the feed outlets are covered when the mold faces are open to a position wherein the feed outlets are uncovered when the mold faces are closed.
