Abstract:

The overall performance of water-reducible polymer dispersions, more specifically alkyd dispersions, can be substantially improved by utilizing resins derived from acidolysis reaction products of polyalkylene terephthalates and polyalkylene naphthalates. According to this invention, polymer dispersions can be produced from low acid value polymers and yet have good water dispersibility. When an aqueous coating composition is formulated using the dispersion of this invention, a final coating is formed that has good hydrolytic stability, and when blended with a latex, exhibits improved gloss and wet adhesion.

Abstract:

A high build, fast drying and fast hardening aqueous coating composition comprising: (a) a latex binder comprising: (i) 35 to 65% by weight, based on said latex binder weight, of at least one hard monomer; (ii) 25 to 55% by weight, based on said latex binder weight, of at least one soft monomer; and (iii) 2 to 15% by weight, based on said latex binder weight, of at least one acid functional monomer; (iv) 0.1% to 2.0% by weight, based on said latex binder weight, of at least one anionic surfactant; wherein said latex binder has a glass transition temperature less than 45 C., and wherein said latex binder has an average particle size diameter of between 160 nanometers to 240 nanometers; (b) a combination of at least two coalescing solvents selected from at least one alkyl alcohol ethoxylate, wherein at least one of the coalescing solvents has an evaporation rate greater than 0.01 and at least a second coalescing solvent has a water solubility less than 10; wherein the acid number of the coating composition is less than 10 mg of KOH per gram of polymer; and wherein the coating composition is applied to a substrate at a wet film thickness of about 2 mils to about 15 mils wet film thickness. Also, a method for providing a high build, fast drying and fast hardening aqueous coating at ambient conditions is provided.

Abstract:

A copolymeric pigment dispersion resin derived from isobornyl (meth)acrylate and one or more other monomers has a number average molecular weight less than about 10,000 and is derived from sufficient isobornyl (meth)acrylate so that a 60 wt. % solution of the resin in propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate forms a clear solution when combined at room temperature with at least three times the resin weight of odorless mineral spirits. The resin may be compatibly mixed with solvent-borne coating compositions based on polar or on non-polar solvents, and can provide a single factory shader or point-of sale colorant formulation for tinting a wide range of such coating compositions.

Abstract:

A pigment dispersion resin may include a copolymer including monomer units derived from isobornyl (meth)acrylate and methyl (meth)acrylate. Monomer units derived from isobornyl (meth)acrylate may be present in the copolymer in an amount greater than about 55% by weight, the copolymer may have a number average molecular weight of 3000 or less, and the resin may be substantially completely soluble in mineral spirits. A method of manufacturing a pigment dispersion resin may include providing monomers dissolved in a solvent, adding a chain transfer agent to the solvent, and copolymerizing the monomers. A pigment vehicle may include a plurality of pigment particles and a pigment dispersion resin. A method of manufacturing a coating composition may include combining a carrier liquid and a pigment vehicle. A method of coating a substrate may include applying a coating composition to the substrate.
