As a Chaplain I have the privilege to enter into the world of patients and families journeying with them through unprecedented experiences. My role is to help create safe spaces for all involved so reflection, mourning, and clarification can have meaning going forward in whatever process those involved may find themselves. I am instrumental in the lives of families and patients who are learning their own stories so they can begin the process of understanding their own grief and loss. As a chaplain I act as an advocate when crisis arises and a catalyst for spiritual relevance. Another form my advocacy is shown is through interfacing with doctors and nurses to help simplify the often overwhelming environment of being in the hospital and being seriously ill. I see the chaplain as being someone who brings spiritual relevance, compassionate engagement, and an understanding of the dynamic flow of the process of crisis and suffering. Without being determinative the chaplain seeks understanding.
