Abstract:

A television receiver includes apparatus for stabilizing an on-screen character display by which the deflection signal source is controlled for operating in a free-running mode, substantially unaffected by signal variations on the sync input line, rather than in a synchronized mode when sync is unreliable or otherwise undesirable. As another feature, the deflection signal source is caused to operate at substantially the same frequency in either mode.

Abstract:

A composite antenna element formed of a plurality of high modulus, high strength, low density, unidirectional graphite fibers bonded together by a flexible matrix material and formed into a tapered rod. The element is stored in a coiled configuration within a groove on the device to which it is attached and uses the strain energy stored within it during coiling to uncoil itself upon release into a vertical cantilever column on the order of eight feet high.

Abstract:

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) structure is disclosed wherein a SAW device is incorporated as an exterior lamina within a composite laminate in order to temperature stabilize the acoustic device. The composite laminate is synthesized to selectively mismatch the thermal expansion characteristics of the piezoelectric material, which is the body of the acoustic device, along the axis of acoustic propagation and simultaneously approximately match the thermal expansion properties along the orthogonal axis. Compressive force is thereby applied to the acoustic device to keep the substrate length constant and thus provide an approximately zero temperature coefficient over a preferred range of temperatures.

Abstract:

A method is provided for analyzing an image comprising a plurality of image pixels to detect distortion within the image. The method comprises a first step of receiving image data for the image, and defining a plurality of blocks within the image data, each block comprising a plurality of adjacent image pixels; a second step of prestoring in a machine readable storage medium a plurality of template data for template pixels corresponding to the image pixels, each of the image pixels having a corresponding center template pixel; a third step of testing each of the image pixels within each of the blocks for a match with the template data, the testing including selectively and iteratively offsetting the template data relative to the center template pixel, and comparing the image pixel under test to each of the offset template data to obtain error statistics; and a fourth step of using the error statistics to select an offset for each of the blocks which provides an optimum match of the image data in a given block to the template data. An apparatus also is provided. The apparatus comprises input circuitry for receiving image data for the image from the image source, a storage medium for storing template data; and a processor for testing each of the image pixels within each of the blocks for a match with the template data.
