Abstract:Embodiments of the present invention provide fine grain concurrency control for transactions in the presence of database updates. During operations, each transaction is assigned a snapshot version number or SVN. A SVN refers to a historical snapshot of the database that can be created periodically or on demand. Transactions are thus tied to a particular SVN, such as, when the transaction was created. Queries belonging to the transactions can access data that is consistent as of a point in time, for example, corresponding to the latest SVN when the transaction was created. At various times, data from the database stored in a memory can be updated using the snapshot data corresponding to a SVN. When a transaction is committed, a snapshot of the database with a new SVN is created based on the data modified by the transaction and the snapshot is synchronized to the memory. When a transaction query requires data from a version of the database corresponding to a SVN, the data in the memory may be synchronized with the snapshot data corresponding to that SVN.

Abstract:In order to provide improved training and testing, a solution to a given problem is accepted from a user. The solution is tested to ensure that it is syntactically and semantically correct. If it is not, then information is displayed to the user regarding the problems. Evaluation cases are used to test semantic correctness. When an evaluation case indicates that a semantic problem has been encountered, the evaluation case is not presented to the user. Rather a similar training case is presented which is calculated to demonstrate the same semantic problem as the evaluation case. Thus, the user can be helped to understand the issue without being provided with the evaluation cases on which the solution is being tested.

Abstract:Embodiments of the present invention provide a run-time scheduler that schedules tasks for database queries on one or more execution resources in a dataflow fashion. In some embodiments, the run-time scheduler may comprise a task manager, a memory manager, and hardware resource manager. When a query is received by a host database management system, a query plan is created for that query. The query plan splits a query into various fragments. These fragments are further compiled into a directed acyclic graph of tasks. Unlike conventional scheduling, the dependency arc in the directed acyclic graph is based on page resources. Tasks may comprise machine code that may be executed by hardware to perform portions of the query. These tasks may also be performed in software or relate to I/O.

Abstract:A computer is provided with sets of switchable resources and utilities that enable the user to select from among a number of color paradigms within which to work. These resources include different operating system support services, such as different color pickers that are respectively directed to the different paradigms. The utilities include some whose operations are integrated with application programs, and others which function on a stand-alone basis. A color personality agent requests the computer user to select a particular color paradigm with which to work. Abstract:An improved telephone interface box which interfaces an incoming telephone line to either a modem or a telephone handset is disclosed. The choice of connection is made by a controller that answers incoming calls and determines if the call is to be directed to the modem or the telephone line. The controller determines the destination of the incoming call by detecting tones on the telephone line or by examining the response of the caller to a voice prompt. If the controller determines that the incoming call is to be directed to the telephone handset, the controller generates a ring signal having substantially the same cadence as that detected on the incoming line and sends that ring signal to the telephone handset. If the handset goes off-hook during the time the controller is making its determination as to the correct destination for the incoming call, the controller suspends its operation until the handset is placed on-hook or a predetermined time interval elapses. The controller also allows the handset to assert priority over an existing connection by rapidly depressing the off-hook switch on the handset.

Abstract:In a printing system having multiple printers, separate print spoolers are launched for each different printer to which a print job is directed. When a document file is sent to a print manager and a spool file is created, the spool file is moved to the specific spooler associated with the printer on which the document is to be printed. Each spooler communicates directly with its associated printer, with respect to all jobs designated for that printer. The various spoolers operate in parallel, and independently of one another. As a result, if one printer is unable to complete a job, the print jobs destined for other printers are not affected, and can be completed.
