Cell Biology: Cell-based techniques include cell culture of immortalized cell lines and primary cell culture, transfection, luciferase reporter assays, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). Tissue-based techniques include embryonic and adult brain dissection, vascular perfusion, cryostat and vibratome sectioning, Golgi staining, Nissl staining, X-gal staining, TUNEL staining, explant co-cultures and brain slice-explant co-cultures, preparation of tissue samples for microarray analysis. Molecular Biology: PCR, reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), real-time quantitative PCR (Q-PCR), molecular cloning, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, southern blotting, electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs). Microscopy: bright field microscopy, differential interference contrast microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, long-term live imaging. Animal Husbandry: mouse colony management, breeding, genotyping. Bioinformatics: sequence analysis (BLAST, DNA Strider), image processing (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, ImageJ, MetaMorph, Zeiss LSM Image Browser), statistics (GraphPad Prism), microarray analysis.
