The method includes adaptation and handling of a mass multimedia message, and mass multimedia message notification. The system uses a retrieval platform and a processing platform. The retrieval platform generates a unique message identifier for the mass multimedia message, and pre-adapts the message into adapted content messages for the terminal types supported by the service provider. The processing platform formats message notifications for the subscriber terminals based on each terminal's messaging capabilities, with each notification containing the unique message identifier.

    A microphone system that may be used in a mobile telephone is disclosed. In one embodiment, a microphone is housed within a first housing portion and is extended therefrom when a second portion of the housing is pivoted to an open position relative to the first housing portion. The microphone is retracted back into the first housing portion when the second housing portion is slidably affixed to the first housing portion and the microphone is extended from the first housing portion when the second housing portion is moved relative to an open position relative to the first housing portion and the microphone is retracted into the first housing portion when the second housing portion is moved into a closed position relative to the first housing portion. In another embodiment, a manually actuated scroll gear is used to extend and retract the microphone. In yet another embodiment, a motor is used to extend and retract the microphone.

    A customer is alerted to the availability or completion of service by a service provider through communication with a wireless terminal of the customer. The terminal has an assigned identification number and a control channel, and as a first step, the identification number (e. g. , telephone number) of the wireless terminal is registered with the service provider. When service for the customer is available or completed, a determination is made of whether the wireless terminal is active. If active, the customer is alerted to the availability or completion of the service, preferably using a preformatted message transmitted to the wireless terminal over the control channel. In one example, the service provider is a restaurant and the customer is alerted to the availability of a table.

    A mechanism is provided whereby a parent, or other second party, can monitor and/or control a child's or other first party's wireless device usage. An interface can allow the parent to set rules for the child's usage, and can specify that the parent should receive messages when a call is made to or from the child's wireless device. In addition to call information, the message may prompt the parent for approval of the call connection. Thus, a parent can decide whether a call that is incoming from or outgoing to a third party should be permitted.
