Both holidays have historic roots in the turn of the 20th century. Mothers Day was given a presidential nod in 1914, just six short years after the idea was floated by social activist Ann Jarvis. A reciprocal pitch for Fathers Day, made in 1910 by a Virginia church group, fizzled.

Mother's Day Events Planned Throughout The Southland
Jarvis announced to her friends her idea of a day of national celebration in honor of mothers, which was first celebrated on May 10, 1908 at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, W.V. where Ann Jarvis worshipped.
The modern call for Mother's Day originated with Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor the work her mother did - not in the home, but to temper the divisions of the Civil War. Ann Jarvis' Mothers Day Work Clubs treated the sanitation needs in several cities and tended to the health of Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.
During the Civil War a woman named Ann Jarvis worked very hard to provide nursing care and promote better sanitation, helping to save thousands of lives during the battles. After the war, she resumed her work to help heal the wounds of the war years and bring families and communities together again.Ann Jarvis founded Mothers Day Work Clubs in five cities to improve sanitary and health conditions. The Mothers Day Work Clubs also treated wounds, fed, and clothed both Union and Confederate soldiers with neutrality. On May 12, 1907, two years after Ann Jarvis death, her surviving daughter, Anna Jarvis held a memorial to her mother to encourage children to appreciate their mothers while they are still alive and continue to honor them once they have died.
