Abstract:

An external skeletal fixation apparatus provides support about a joint such as the knee. The apparatus includes a first external support section with one or more rings rigidly supporting a first skeletal element (e. g. , the femur) on one side of the joint and a second external support section, with two or more rings, rigidly supporting a second skeletal element (e. g. , the tibia) on an opposite side of the joint. The apparatus further includes a hinged support section interconnecting the first and second external support sections in the vicinity of the joint such that the hinged support section pivots the joint about a generally lateral axis when the skeletal elements move through angular flexion or extension. The second external support section includes at least a first support ring element and a second support ring element rotatably coupled with the first support ring element. The first support ring element is connected with the hinged support section and the second support ring element is positioned to rigidly support the second skeletal element.

Abstract:

Methods, systems, and devices according to this invention provide drill guides for optimal placement of fixation elements, such as half pins, into a patient's bone. According to one embodiment, a collar frame with a collar adapted to receive a bar of an orthopedic external fixation system such that the collar may be moved linearly or rotationally about the bar is coupled to a guide frame including a bore through which a fixation element of the external fixation system may be inserted. The coupling between the collar frame and the guide frame allows for them to rotate about at least one axis relative to each other. In one embodiment, the collar frame and the guide frame may rotate about three axes relative to each other.

Abstract:

Systems, devices and methods are disclosed for treating fractures. The systems, devices and methods may include one or both of an implant, such as an intramedullary nail, and a fastening assembly, such as a lag screw and compression screw assembly. The implant in some embodiments has a proximal section with a transverse aperture and a cross-section that may be shaped to more accurately conform to the anatomical shape of cortical bone and to provide additional strength and robustness in its lateral portions, preferably without requiring significant additional material. The fastening assembly may be received to slide, in a controlled way, in the transverse aperture of the implant. In some embodiments, the engaging member and the compression device are configured so that the compression device interacts with a portion of the implant and a portion of the engaging member to enable controlled movement between the first and second bone fragments. This configuration is useful for, among other things, compressing a fracture.
