Surgical Navigation Technologies, Inc. - Louisville CO
  • International Classification:
    A61F 504
  • US Classification:
    606 90, 606102
  • Abstract:
A vertebral distractor is disclosed for use in performing anterior cervical spinal surgery. The vertebral distractor is associated with a computer controlled surgical navigation system employing an energy-detecting array to track positions of the vertebral distractor in three dimensional space relative to a known reference point. The guide comprises a shaft, a stationary first arm, and at least one movable second arm. At least one electrically energizable energy emitter array is attached to the shaft for use in identifying the location of the vertebral distractor relative to the vertebrae. A system for using the vertebral distractor in spinal surgery is disclosed.

Anthony J. Melkent - Germantown TN
  • Assignee:
Surgical Navigation Technologies, Inc. - Louisville CO
  • International Classification:
    A61B 505
  • US Classification:
    600424, 606130, 378205
  • Abstract:
Apparatus and methods are disclosed for use within an image-guided surgical navigation system for the storage and measurement of trajectories for surgical instruments. An icon representing the real-time trajectory of a tracked instrument is overlaid on one or more pre-acquired images of the patient. At the surgeons command, the navigation system can store multiple trajectories of the instrument and create a static icon representing each saved trajectory for display. The surgeon may also measure a planar angle between any two trajectories. The angle is computed in the plane of the image, and therefore will be computed separately for each image displayed. Furthermore, the surgeon has the option of computing and displaying the three-dimensional distance between two points defined by any two trajectories.

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6725080, Apr 20, 2004
  • Filed:
    Mar 1, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/795126
  • Inventors:
Anthony J. Melkent - Germantown TN
David M. Kahler - Earlysville VA
  • Assignee:
Surgical Navigation Technologies, Inc. - Louisville CO
  • International Classification:
    A61B 500
  • US Classification:
    600424, 600426, 606130
  • Abstract:
Apparatus and methods are disclosed for use within an image-guided surgical navigation system for facilitating the combined positioning and orientation of multiple surgical implements. A tool guide having multiple cannulas is tracked by a surgical navigation system in real time. Position data of the tool guide is registered and combined with pre-acquired images by the navigation computer. Concurrent graphical representations of the plurality of cannulas are superimposed over the images and displayed. The display allows the surgeon to place the tool guide into the patients body and position and orient the plurality of cannulas which are then used to place each of the implements.
