Novel 22 k gold alloys including silver, boron, cobalt and copper. The alloys meet modem jewelry fabrication techniques requirements and exhibit pleasing yellow color. They are stable under normal use and do not appreciably tarnish. They also have substantially no discoloring effect on the skin. These formulations possess work hardening properties consistent with gold alloys of lower karat while maintaining color properties consistent with traditional 22 k gold jewelry.
By including zinc, nickel, copper and cobalt in a 22 kt gold alloy, it is possible to obtain the desired white gold color in an alloy with satisfactory metallurgical properties and with reasonable raw material costs. More specifically, these elements are present in the following ranges: Gold≈91.67%; Zinc 0.4 to 1.5%; Nickel 6.0 to 7.5%; Copper 0.4 to 1.5%; Cobalt 0.02 to 0.50%. Master alloys and methods of making jewelry are also disclosed.

Abstract:
A new nickel-free sterling silver alloy with superior tarnish resistant, yet substantially similar cold working and mechanical properties is disclosed using a specified mixture of zinc, copper, silicon, iridium, and indium with pure silver. A new and improved method of manufacture involving a four-step process whereby the non-silver components are fabricated in an inert gas or reducing atmosphere into a master alloy of pre-determined composition, and in a final step mixed with a predetermined mass of pure silver to produce the new alloy.
