In my previous life i was a designer but after having 3 children and surviving a divorce i decided to retrain to work in education, so i could get the holidays off with my children. I went on a taster course in sign language that anothe mum from primary school was running and from that i passed several exams. This enabled me to work in special needs. During this time i worked in a village pub all the hours they would let me around my children being in school. I then enrolled with a recruitment agency to get some supply work as an SSA in Special Needs schools. Over a short period i began to get more hours in schools than in the pub so i took the big leap of faith and gave up my pub job. I was offered some part time work with a primary special needs school, so i had my foot in the door. A few months later i heard of a job going in a local primary school for a 1:1 with a high level in sign language. I applied and got the job. At the same time i applied to do a degree at Liverpool Hope University in Advanced Early Years Teaching with Special Needs and Disabilities, studying part time over 6yrs. I changed jobs and applied to work in the local high school as an SSA in the Autistic Unit and was successful in getting the job. Whilst at the high school i graduated with a degree of bachelor of arts with hons in 2011. I'm currently doing another course at Birmingham Uni to be Autism specific whilst still working full time at the high school. I feel privileged to have such a wonderful job.
